Tsunamis BY: Kaitlyn Ryan

How/why Tsunamis, also known as seismic waves, are waves with an extreme amount of power traveling across the ocean. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, and explosions near or underneath ocean can cause a tsunami.

Diagrams to help

Japan Friday, March 11th a devastating 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit Japan, soon followed by a powerful tsunami that took the lives of many. Devastation filled the air in Japan that day as the country was in need of help and hope.

Preparation There are many ways to prepare for tsunamis, but to predict tsunamis is very hard. Throughout the oceans, there is a seismic sensor which is on the ocean floor. If they sense weird movement, they send signals to the wave buoys on the ocean surface. Then, the wave buoys signal up to satellites that notify the officials. The officials then inform the government that might get affected by it. If you hear the siren advising you there is a tsunami, you should move to higher ground. If you live in a tsunami affected area, you should have a disaster family plan on what to do, and a disaster supply kit in case your home is destroyed.
