3. Health and safety
Each school has a Health & Safety Policy and this is available on request to volunteers, please ask at the office.
School staff should ensure that volunteers are clear about emergency procedures and about any safety aspects associated with a particular task (e.g. accompanying children on visits).

4. Health and safety
Volunteers are asked to exercise due care and attention and report any obvious hazards or concerns to the class teacher or the school office.
Both schools are non-smoking sites.

5. Security
Visitors, including volunteers, are asked to use the main entrance and sign in, please wear a visitor sticker or a badge in school.

6. Supervision and advice
All volunteers are under the direction of a school member of staff or the swimming teacher.
They should have clear guidance from the school staff about how an activity should be carried out and the expected learning outcomes – please ask if you are unsure.

7. School Rules Be safe Be kind or be considerate Be responsible
Please talk to the adult in charge with good news or bad.
Swimming: two strikes rule – inform the adult in the classroom on your return with information about good or bad behaviour.

8. Confidentiality
Volunteers, like staff, are asked to respect the code of confidentiality.
Any concerns that you have about the children you work with or come into contact with should be discussed with school staff and not with the parents of the child or other people outside school.

9. Swimming Helpers
Encourage children to do as much as possible for themselves when getting changed and dry.
Adults do not change in the same space as the children.
If a child/children has needed some assistance to get dry or dressed volunteers are asked to tick the names on the class list available pool side.
Mobile phones must not be taken into the changing rooms during swimming sessions but they may be left in bags or coats pool side.

10. Child Protection and Safeguarding
Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play in safeguarding children. Volunteers working with children are advised to maintain an attitude of ‘it could happen here’ where safeguarding is concerned. Whenever concerned about the welfare of a child, adults should always act in the interests of the child.

12. What if you are concerned about a child?
Speak to any member of school staff or a designated safeguarding lead: Mrs Bradbury, Mrs Sheridan, Miss Biggs
