4. What is an Operating System?
The operating system (or OS) is a computer program
A program is a sequence of instructions that guides the computer through the performance of a specific task or sequence of tasks
The individual lines of instruction are referred to as code
The term software refers to any program that makes a computer run – including operating systems and application programs.
Every computer requires an operating system in order to function. Think of an operating system as the central manager of communication, coordination, and control.

Users and application programs interact with the OS
Applications create documents or complete specific tasks. They use the OS to control the hardware functions of the computer.

6. Desktop Operating Systems
Are used on desktop and laptop computers
Are released in various versions and editions which determine the features that are available
Include a Desktop which is the central place from which you begin working
The desktop is an interface (a point where two systems – people, networks, or devices) meet and exchange information
The OS communicates with the user through a GUI (graphical user interface)

9. Common Operating System Features
User Accounts
Have an account name, password and permissions (rules associated with objects – files, folders and settings)
User Profiles
A collection of settings associated with a user account. A profile includes settings for elements such as the Desktop background, lock screen, screen saver, date and time information.
Built-in power off procedures:
Shut Down – closes all files and programs, closes the OS and turns off the power completely.

Powering Off a Windows Computer
Click the Start button then click Power to display the Power menu.
In the Power menu, click Shut down to power off the system.

11. Understanding Windows Power Options
Sleep – leaves the computer on, but turns off the screen and puts work into memory
Hibernate – (Laptops Only) writes open files and programs to storage and turns off the system; uses no power; useful if you will not using your laptop for an extended period of time, but you do not want to close your documents.
Shut Down – close files and operating system and turns off the system
Restart – closes all files and programs, exits and then restarts the operating system

20. Using the Taskbar Taskbar Buttons
A button displays in the taskbar for each open application and any apps you have “pinned” to the taskbar. If you point the mouse pointer over a taskbar button, Windows displays a preview window for each file that is open within that application. Click the taskbar button to activate a program or window.

Task view shows small windows of all your running apps in the middle of the screen and displays a command for creating virtual Desktops.

22. Using the Taskbar Notification Area
Displays the time and date and provides quick access to items such as the volume control or a wireless network connection. It can also display information about the status of the power level of a laptop battery or whether operation system updates are available. You control which icons are visible.

Global settings affect all user accounts on the system
Generally, related to hardware: i.e. screen resolution, power management options, date and time settings, installed printers
Profile-specific settings are settings tied to an individual user’s profile
These affect only one user account on the system: i.e. background pictures, screen savers, themes and sound schemes.

Automatic Updating – Windows 10
Windows Update automatically downloads and installs that latest updates, drivers and patches released by Microsoft
Windows Update will automatically download and install important and critical updates by default
Optional updates and updates require you to accept new terms of use are downloaded, and Windows Update will let you know these are ready to install
Cannot selectively install updates
You can choose only whether your computer will reboot automatically to install updates when the system is inactive, or whether to be notified to schedule a reboot
