2 Definition: WHAT IS GPRS ? At the start of mobile communication, the mobiles were used to send messages and for voice call. But now, today the mobile communication is approximately providing all the features of computer communication including the internet facility. For the internet facility on the mobile infrastructure, the companies are using global standard and this standard is called GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). This internet standard is based upon the GSM platform. The data in this service is transfer from source to destination in the form of mobile packet and this service is being used on the 2G and 3G mobile communication standards.

4 An Outline: Main features of GPRS GPRS Telephones
Data Transmission Speeds The Network Security Network Protocols Used

5 Main features of GPRS GPRS is providing wide range of services for the mobile users, because when the users are easily connected with the internet then they can easily access their bank account details and also they can check out their s. Following are the main features of the GPRS. 1-Always Internet Access 2-Multimedia Messaging Service 3-Broadcasting 4-Point to Point service 5-Push to talk

6 GPRS Telephones

7 GPRS Telephones Approximately all the latest mobile phones are compatible with the GPRS and we only need to enable its setting. These settings are enabled by the mobile phone company, because they need to pair the mobile phone characteristics according to their GPRS service.

8 Data Transmission Speeds

9 Data Transmission Speeds
The data transmission rate of GPRS is not very high at this time, because this new technology is going to implement with advance satellite and when this GPRS will be integrated with the satellite telephone then the speed and data transmission will increase. At this stage, GPRS data transmission speed is 56 Kbit/sec to 114 Kbit/sec. this variation in the speed depends upon the type of mobile and the strength of signals.

10 The Network The network of the GPRS can be upgraded from the existing GSM network, because we need to add some extra devices to convert the existing mobile communication network into GPRS mobile communication network. Hence, we can say that we don’t need to replace the existing elements of the GSM and we only need to connect more elements to implement the GPRS in GSM. In the existing GSM network, we need to add the following nodes to add the functionality of GPRS.

11 The Network 1- SGSN 2-GGSN 3-PCU

12 Security The security of the GPRS is very important, because the users are using their bank account information on the GPRS internet service. That’s why; the other very vital personal information is being shared on the GPRS mobile communication.

13 Network Protocols Used
1- X.25 This protocol is providing communication between different segments of wide area networks (WAN). The history of this protocol is related to back 1980, when the packet switching networks were providing communication facilities in different fields of life. 2-TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) Internet Protocol (IP) Internet protocol is very important protocol in mobile internet (GPRS). This protocol is used for the communication of data across packet switching network. This protocol is related and based upon the TCP/IP.

14 Network Protocols Used
3-Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is based upon the internet. We use this protocol for electronic mails and also for the transmission across the internet. All the messages which are sent or received by the mail servers are transferred from source to destination due to this SMTP protocol. We will use this protocol for mail transfer. 4-ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) Some protocols are used for sending the data from source to destination and some protocols are used to control this process. In other words we can say that this protocol is used for sending error messages about the services.
