2 David: A Man after God’s Own Heart Series [21]
The Davidic Covenant David: A Man after God’s Own Heart Series [21] 2 Samuel 7:1-29 © August 27, 2017 Pastor Paul K. Kim 2

3 HOW DAVIDIC COVENANT FITS IN GOD’S SOVEREIGN PLAN
It is a critical part of God’s sovereign plan for the salvation of the world as well as of Israel in keeping with Abrahamic Covenant (Gen. 12:1-3).

4 1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12:1-3

5 HOW DAVIDIC COVENANT FITS IN GOD’S SOVEREIGN PLAN
It is a critical part of God’s sovereign plan for the salvation of the world as well as of Israel in keeping with Abrahamic Covenant (Gen. 12:1-3). It has the two-layered implications of God’s promises—for near future [David’s dynasty, 2 Sam. 7:10-11] and distant future [Christ’s kingdom, Rev. 11:15]. It is a continuation of fulfilling Abrahamic and Mosaic Covenant—for (1) land, (2) descendants/people, (3) name, and (4) blessing (Gen. 12:1-3; 22:18). It overcomes Israel’s breach of Mosaic Covenant by God’s sovereign grace through the Messiah [Son of David, Jer. 23:5-6; Isa. 9:6-7].

6 26 “See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: 27 the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, 28 and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way that I am commanding you today, to go after other gods that you have not known. Deuteronomy 11:26-28

7 GOD’S COVENANT WITH DAVID AND DAVID’S RESPONSE TO GOD
David’s Desire: May I build a house for the LORD? (7:1-7)  1 Now when the king lived in his house and the LORD  had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, 2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” 3 And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.” 4 But that same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, 5 “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: Would you build me a house to dwell in?

8 GOD’S COVENANT WITH DAVID AND DAVID’S RESPONSE
David’s Desire: May I build a house for the LORD? (7:1-7)  6 I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. 7 In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ (7:1-7) David had a noble intention and love for God, which led him to have a longing to build a temple—a permanent house for the LORD. But in reality, God did not need a house to dwell; the answer was no. The LORD dwelt in the tabernacle was solely for the people of God; in that God of the universe had condescended to dwell among them with the very presence of the LORD for the people of Israel.

9 GOD’S COVENANT WITH DAVID AND DAVID’S RESPONSE
God’s Answer: No, I will make you a house. (7:8-17) 8 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. 12 When your days are fulfilled and  you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

10 GOD’S COVENANT WITH DAVID AND DAVID’S RESPONSE
God’s Answer: No, I will make you a house. (7:8-17) 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’” 17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. (7:8-17) God’s tree promises here: (1) to make David’s name great, (2) to give a place for Israel, and (3) to establish the throne of David’s kingdom forever. Notice the multiple use of “house” (e.g., your son will build a temple). Notice also the multi-layered meanings of the promise [now & forever]!

11 GOD’S COVENANT WITH DAVID AND DAVID’S RESPONSE
David’s Response: Who am I, O Lord God. (7:18-29) 18 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God. You have spoken also of your servant's house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord God! 20 And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord God!  21 Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it.  22 Therefore you are great, O LORD God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

12 GOD’S COVENANT WITH DAVID AND DAVID’S RESPONSE
David’s Response: Who am I, O Lord God. (7:18-29) 23 And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name and doing for them great and awesome things by driving out before your people, whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods? 24 And you established for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever. And you, O LORD, became their God. 25 And now, O LORD God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. 26 And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you.

13 GOD’S COVENANT WITH DAVID AND DAVID’S RESPONSE
David’s Response: Who am I, O Lord God. (7:18-29) 27 For you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you.  28 And now, O Lord God, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. 29 Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord God, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.” (7:28-29) David’s first response was to SIT BEFORE THE LORD—a posture of humble surrender which led him to heartfelt praise and worship! Why wasn’t David pupped up with pride by God’s incredible blessings? It was his FAITH which received God’s sovereign grace in his weaknesses.

14 LESSONS FROM THE STORY OF GOD’S COVENANT WITH DAVID
Lesson #1: God’s covenant with David reveals God’s sovereign grace not only for David but also for all believers in Christ. 5 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’” Jeremiah 23:5-6

15 LESSONS FROM THE STORY OF GOD’S COVENANT WITH DAVID
Lesson #1: God’s covenant with David reveals God’s sovereign grace not only for David but also for all believers in Christ. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Isaiah 9:6-7

16 LESSONS FROM THE STORY OF GOD’S COVENANT WITH DAVID
Lesson #1: God’s covenant with David reveals God’s sovereign grace not only for David but also for all believers in Christ. 11 “In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches, and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old, 12 that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations who are called by my name,” declares the Lord who does this. Amos 9:11-12 God’s sovereign plan of salvation was first for the Jews then to all peoples of the earth as the people of God in the eternal Kingdom of God. The covenants that God made with Abraham, Moses, and David are ONE PLAN of God’s sovereign grace for all those who believe in Son of David. This is the essence of the gospel of God by grace through faith in Christ!

17 LESSONS FROM THE STORY OF DAVID AND THE ARK OF THE LORD
Lesson #2: God’s covenant with David points to the centrality of Christ, “Son of David” not only as our Savior but also as our eternal King.  31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Luke 1:31-33

18 LESSONS FROM THE STORY OF DAVID AND THE ARK OF THE LORD
Lesson #2: God’s covenant with David points to the centrality of Christ, “Son of David” not only as our Savior but also as our eternal King. 15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” Revelation 11:15 God’s sovereign plan of salvation is centered around Christ. This also means that the CENTER of history and our lives also ought to be Christ the eternal King in all aspects of the reality and practice. Without Christ, there is no gospel, no salvation, & no hope for the future!

19 LESSONS FROM THE STORY OF DAVID AND THE ARK OF THE LORD
Lesson #3: David’s response to God urges us to sit before the LORD not only with humble surrender but also with deep gratitude and praise. 18 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?... 22 Therefore you are great, O LORD God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.  2 Samuel 17:18, 22 David’s posture is no longer of self-efforts but it is of humble surrender to God’s sovereign grace and favor for him. There is no room for pride and arrogance for believers in Christ. This posture ought be our posture of receiving God’s favor, blessings, and promises as well; in that, our praise, gratitude, and worship overflows!!!

20 David Sat Before the LORD
David sat. This may be the single most critical act that David ever did, the action that put him out of action—more crictial than killing Goliath, more critical than honoring Saul (his enemy) as God’s anointed, more critical than bringing the Ark to Jerusalem. More critical because what David now does in response to Nathan’s pastoral/prophetic counsel will either qualify or disqualify him from the kingwork for which he has been anointed, trained, preserved, and empowered When David sat down before God, it was the farthest thing from passivity or resignation; it was prayer. It was entering into the presence of God, becoming aware of God’s word, trading in his plans for God’s plans, letting his enthusiasm for being a king with the authority and strength to do something for God be replaced with the willingness to become a king who would represent truly the sovereignty of God the high king. ― Eugene H. Peterson

21 THREE PRACTICAL QUESTIONS FOR OUR EVERYDAY LIFE
In what ways will you trust God’s sovereign grace for you as a believer in Christ, “Son of David”? What would it mean for you to acknowledge the centrality of Jesus Christ in your everyday life as your eternal King as well as your Savior? What is your first step toward sitting before the LORD with deep humility, gratitude, and praise for His sovereign grace?
