2 What is a paragrph ? Series of organized and coherent sentences
Three to seven sentences related to a single topic Most have a three-part structure: introduction, body, and conclusion

3 Introduction First section of a paragraph Includes the topic sentence
Other sentences that give background information or provide a transition

4 Topic Sentence A single controlling idea of the paragraph

5 Body Follows the introduction Discusses the controlling idea
Uses facts, arguments, analysis, examples, or other information

6 Conclusion Final section
Summarizes the connections between the information discussed in the body and the paragraph's controlling idea

8 Cohesive Devices Repeat key words or phrases
Create parallel structures Be cosistent in point of view, verb tense and number Use synomyms or near synonyms to avoid repetition Use transition words

9 Useful Transitions To show addition: again, and, also, besides, equally important, first (second, etc.), further, furthermore, in addition, in the first place, moreover, next, too To give examples : for example, for instance, in fact, specifically, that is, to illustrate To summarize or conclude : all in all, in conclusion, in other words, in short, in summary, on the whole, that is, therefore, to sum up
