Frightening experiences?
Horror Genre Frightening experiences?
2
Horror…..characters Horror films generally tend to have a protagonist who is often a loner, socially reviled who must save the community that rejects her. She is usually fearful, and that weakness allows us to identify with her struggle. Flawed characters create high stakes and allow for character development. Many in this genre, however, are one-dimensional killing machines.
3
Horror…..monsters Vampires fascinate us as they are both seductive and terrifying. Monsters such as Frankenstein’s creature or Edward Scissorhands may actually display more humanity than the supposedly threatening populace.
4
Horror…..setting Sometimes the setting places the protagonist in an unfamiliar surrounding, something exotic yet terrifying as there is no sense of security in a place you do not know.
5
Horror…action Action is almost always at night. Night scenes bring out our fears and allow for a myriad of lighting effects designed to increase suspense and terror. Lighting is frequently from below which is totally opposite of our daily experience, and allows for distorted features.
6
Horror…..staging Horror film staging exploits the use of off-screen action and sound that suggests the presence of danger but denies the audience the relative assurance of actually keeping an eye on the antagonist.
