What is Turnitin? Turnitin is an evaluation and plagiarism detection tool for student submissions. It includes originality checking, peer review capabilities, and grading assistance. It can be used as a standalone product or via the Canvas integration.

How to set up Turnitin in canvas
Turnitin is ALREADY AVAILABLE to every class Add it to your assignment using the “External Tool” submission type (choose Turnitin LTI) Best practices for setting up your assignment: Add a due date Add an “available from” date DON’T add an “until” date Choose “Load This Tool in a New Tab” if you have long/detailed instructions

Go to “Settings” in Turnitin dashboard Best use of optional settings: Allow late submissions: YES Originality Report generation: Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are allowed until due date) Exclude bibliographic materials from Similarity Index: Yes Exclude quoted materials from Similarity Index: Yes Allow students to view Originality Reports: Yes Would you like to save these options as your defaults: Yes

Assignment page = Turnitin dashboard Originality scores will appears in Speedgrader and on dashboard Tips for using the dashboard: Use page numbers to view additional submissions (next slide) Click on Similarity score to launch originality report Click on “Originality”, “GradeMark”, “Peermark” to toggle tools on and off

Using a rubric with turnitin
Turnitin has an internal rubric function “Attach a rubric” under “optional settings” To use a Canvas rubric: Create your assignment, but instead of selecting "External Tool" from Submission Type, choose "Online". Save the assignment. Click on the "Add Rubric" button, and select the desired rubric. Edit the assignment settings again, and change Submission Type from "Online" to "External Tool". Follow the rest of the directions for completing the Turnitin assignment configuration.

Known issues with canvas lti
Speedgrader does not show originality score, even though dashboard does Allow resubmissions, and click on the exclamation point to resubmit manually Manually enter scores Students get error message regarding problems with dates or assignment “inactive” Instructor must click on the assignment once before students can access it Students get an error message about invalid Student needs to check their Canvas settings and correct their address Students asked to login to Turnitin when accessing via Canvas Usually a Mac issue. Use Chrome instead of Safari OR enable cookies in Safari.

USING TURNITIN.COM If you have used Turnitin outside of Canvas in the past, you can keep doing so If you have used Turnitin inside of Canvas, but decide to use Turnitin.com instead, you just need to reset your password (next slide) If you’ve never used Turnitin at all, you can create an account (you’ll need the Account ID – ask us!) Further instructions for using Turnitin outside of Canvas:
