HARINGEY HEALTHY SCHOOLS CONFERENCE
POSITIVE LUNCHTIMES PE and School Sport has enjoyed a real revival since the introduction of the PE, School Sport, Club Links (PESSCL) strategy in October 2002 Since that time, we have seen unparalleled increases in the amount and the quality of physical education and sport delivery in schools, and you have been key contributors to this increase For the first time in years, our PE and sports system is the envy of many other countries across the world: Our young people have access to an increased and improved range of activity both within school and beyond, and participation is increasing year on year Our schools are appreciating the contribution that high quality PE and sport delivery can make to the wider learning of our young people Our Government has acknowledged this, with the launching of a new national strategy and increased investment to allow us to continue to put sport at the heart of every school. This presentation aims to highlight the key components of the national picture for the further development of PE and sport for young people, and sets our sights on the next four years as we strive to improve on our success over the past six years. Comments from senior managers
“Children are more active and happy” “We have fewer problems to deal with” We’ve never known such happy lunchtimes. We have also found fewer incidents of misbehaviour in the afternoon as the children are so well occupied” Four managers said that they had fewer incidents to deal with and one stated that it had a positive impact on afternoon learning. NOW don’t panic – YOU are not responsible for 5 hours!
This is our best assessment of current participation patterns in England. 1. The 30/50/20 split is the national picture and shows where young people are currently accessing their sport– YOU may have a different profile in your school or partnership 2. 2 hours curriculum provision underpins all our work and we need to continue to move schools forward where this is not happening – ensuring the curriculum provision is high quality. This is your school responsibility - subject leader responsibility, with support from you (PLT), all staff involved in the delivery of PE ensuring the young people receive a high quality experience upon which they can build success in all areas of school - and subsequently they will want to be involved in more The top 30% - some young people (top 10%) of this category are already doing 5 hours and probably many more – we need to ensure these young people are getting an experience of the highest quality, access to coaches, competition and opportunity to support them doing what they already do, whilst supporting the others here into the extra hour. The middle band of young people, are already engaged by sport but not totally convinced. They might commonly take prt in their PE at school, and maybe another hour after school. But they don’t currently do any more than that. They could opt out at any time and engage in something else or switch off completely. The challenge here is to ensure the opportunities available reflect what they want, that they are able to access it and at a price they can afford – this might involve a break away from traditional sports and the introduction of some alternatives activities The 20% group at the bottom of the diagram – some of them (top 5 – 10%) may dip in and out of sport depending upon who runs the session, whether their friends go etc. The rest are pretty disengaged for a variety of reasons – cost, access, lack of interest, other commitments …there are many. The challenge here is to engage them in a physically active lifestyle, to understand its importance for a healthy life and provide opportunities for them to access sport when they and their circumstances are ready for them . NOW don’t panic – YOU are not responsible for 5 hours! Breaking the 5 hour offer into clear sections allows us to identify the key partners in the delivery 2 hours Curriculum – remains a key priority for School Sport Partnerships (you!) School Sport – this is your out of hours programme – access to sporting opportunities before school, lunchtimes, after school, engaging with coaches, competition , leadership activities organised by the school (YOU?) This is the other key responsibility of School Sport Partnerships – to improve and increase opportunities for young people to participate in sport at school, but outside of the curriculum Community Sport – linking with National Governing Bodies, supporting young people into local clubs, signposting them and bringing the NGB’s and coaches, clubs into the school to support the transition from school into community. New Sport England Strategy will significantly support this area of work as the Governing Bodies establish their pathways and develop their school to club work. The Green triangle area is where the young talented people are identified by their Governing Body and are now on an elite pathway for their performance – this is primarily the responsibility of UK Sport The Physical Activity area of work, will touch on school and community providers but it is primarily the work of our health colleagues and whilst we will support and instigate work in this area we are not the main drivers of this agenda. Throughout all aspects of the sporting landscape we have to ensure we are giving opportunity to ALL pupils through the appropriate route for them and allow young people to develop and experience opportunities which will develop their coaching, volunteering and leadership skills 2 | Footer, if required

THE OLYMPIC & PARALYMPIC VALUES
Friendship Respect Excellence Determination Courage Inspiration Equality As we move towards London 2012, we have a gilt-edged opportunity to capture that olympic spirit and turn it into some positive outcomes for our young people through sport. The Olympic values of Friendship, Respect, Excellence, Determination, Courage, Inspiration and Equality are as relevant to a whole-school planning process as they are to pure sport. With your help, we can continue to develop the world’s best PE and sport system by 2012, and use PE and sport to change young people’s lives We wish you luck as you continue with your journey....
