Population health is too important to be left to public health agencies alone, especially if we are serious about addressing disparities. Prevention’s focus has been on health disparities, but now that it is required of others, it is a way for us to build capacity. This change provides a pathway to discussions involving prevention at various aspects. We may be able to collect more data from others to aid in our own efforts.

Cultural Humility Verses Cultural Competence; Do You Know Me? Overview and Impressions “Actually, the most important part of culture…Is that which is hidden and internal, but which governs the behavior encounter.” ---Hall 1979. What is the difference between Cultural Competence and Cultural Humility? Cultural competency implies that one can function with a thorough knowledge of the morals and beliefs of another culture. Cultural humility acknowledges that it is impossible to be adequately knowledgeable about cultures other than one’s own.

Cultural Humility Verses Cultural Competence; Do You Know Me? How It Shapes Our Work Understanding cultural humility enhances our effectiveness in engaging the communities that we serve, because it is a lifelong process of self-reflection and self-critique. Having cultural humility requires prevention staff to make a commitment to maintain active engagement with communities and its members. We also have to go beyond the culture that we can see, and explore that which we cannot.

In order to diminish silos, it’s important to utilize facilitated conversations and action planning. Use the facilitated or focused conversations to help coalitions discover and explore topics or to address concerns regarding a strategy. These techniques allow everyone to have a voice, and to remove the report out technique of a meeting. By giving everyone an opportunity to express their thoughts, we are less likely to stay in our own silos.

9 Health Systems Reform and Prevention: Opportunities for Coordination and Collaboration How It Shapes Our Work By integrating and collaborating with other forms of healthcare, we have the opportunity to enhance behavioral health and substance abuse services, which includes prevention. This collaboration must start with our grassroots coalitions, and then spread to our regional and state efforts.

Enhanced Enforcement of the Minimum Legal Drinking Age in NYC How It Shapes Our Work Ensure that law enforcement and, if possible, DEA are part of local coalitions. Increase Alcohol Merchant Education Look at data on where/how youth are obtaining Look at target areas of majority retail establishments Develop sustainable initiatives.

12 Substance misuse and mental illness share risk and protective factors.
Community Benefit: A New Opportunity for Collaboration in Substance Misuse Prevention Overview and Impressions “By 2020, mental & substance use disorders will surpass all physical diseases as a major cause of disability worldwide.” (SAMHSA) Substance misuse and mental illness share risk and protective factors. Yet, many health care systems are disconnected in treatment. Conduct Community Health Needs Assessment Every Three Years.

13 Community Benefit: A New Opportunity for Collaboration in Substance Misuse Prevention How It Shapes Our Work In order to bridge the gaps in our services, and enable prevention to collaborate with public health and clinical systems, we need to be involved in the integrated processes. This idea goes back to the breaking down the silos message and the importance of identifying health disparities from previous slides. The recommendation is to develop a needs assessment every three years for focused collaboration, but it really should be looked at more frequently.

14 Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health—Shared Risk Factors/Shared Prevention: Call for Collaboration Overview and Impressions Once again, we look at the relationship between substance abuse and behavioral health and how prevention fits into the health systems reform. The importance of develop a strategic plan in collaboration with all identified community partners. Break through the silos to implement appropriate evidenced-based programs.

15 Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health—Shared Risk Factors/Shared Prevention: Call for Collaboration How It Shapes Our Work The theme of collaboration and integration continues, which exemplifies the importance of maintaining healthy/supportive coalitions; they are the key to our role in the future. Without engaging and focused strategic planning, we will not be able to adequately implement evidenced-based programs, practices, and strategies.

16 Bullying and Substance Use Among Adolescents Overview and Impressions
Not only is there research to support caffeinated energy drinks and alcohol use, but it also looks at the link to bullying as well. Relationship could be due to pattern of behavior of impulsive actions and stimulation. Also, the role of parenting behaviors involving alcohol use is also identified as a determinant.

17 Bullying and Substance Use Among Adolescents How It Shapes Our Work
When looking at risk factors, we need to also look at the amount of caffeine consumed. This link gives an idea of the different types of programs, practices, and strategies that should be considered. For example, the Rev Your Bev Campaign, looks at the amount of sugar, but we may also want to study the effects of caffeine.

19 Preparing Prevention Staff to Assist and Train Communities to Implement the Strategic Prevention Framework Process: Tools and Tactics You Can Use How It Shapes Our Work Utilizing the various tools that were presented can give new prevention staff ideas of how to become more comfortable with facilitating groups, and how to incorporate SPF. There are a few useful handbooks that this group made available on the NPN Conference Website.
