Safety Test Info Students must pass the safety test with at least and 80% in order to use machines. Students have three chances to take the test. If they cannot pass on the third try they must work with hand tools. The test is 100 questions of multiple choice, true/false, matching, and short answer. Know at least three specific rules for each machine. Auker

What is M.O.S!?!? M.O.S (Margin of Safety)- Is the area between you and the blade, given in a measurement. For example, the margin of safety for the tablesaw is 4”, meaning your finger should never be closer to the blade then 4” away. Auker

Radial Arm Saw Machine Size determined by MOS General safety rules
Specific instruction Radial Arm Saw Diameter of the blade (ours is 14 inches) 6 inches -Keep hands and fingers out of the path of the saw. -Keep guards in place. -Avoid distractions. -Check with instructor before doing special cuts. -Use ONLY for crosscutting. -Keep table clean. -Stock must be against the back fence. -Check depth of cut so you don’t cut too far into the table. -lock out arm -Always return saw to back before moving stock. -Don’t walk away until blade has finished freewheeling Auker

Jointer Machine Size determined by MOS Specific safety rules
Specific instruction Jointer The width of the table or length of knives; 6 in,8 in and 12 are common. 4 inches -Infeed is the only table you should adjust. -Feed wood to cut with the grain (see in class demo) -Table on the right is the infeed and table on the left is the outfeed. -Max. cut for an edge is 1/8 in but only use 1/16 in for normal work. Max cut on surface is 1/32 in. -Stock being cut must be 12 in. long and no less than 1/2 in. thick. Auker
10
Planer Machine Size determined by MOS Specific safety rules
Specific instruction Surface planner Determined by the width of the table or cutters and the drop of the table (ours is 24 in by 8 in) No MOS for this machine because the cutters are inside the machine. -NEVER send a piece of wood into the machine cross grain. -Stand to one side while planning . In the event of a kickback you would not be hit while standing off to the side. A kickback might occur if: 1) you set the machine for too great a cut, 2)if you sent two different thicknesses of wood in at the same time, 3)if you turned the machine on in reverse. -NEVER lower the table while the machine is running as this may cause kickback. -The planer can be adjusted before startup and during running. -Stock must be at least 1/4 in thick to go into the planer and be at least 12 in long. -Even though the machine can cut 1/4 in of wood at a time, you take 1/16 in off to get the smoothest cut. -One full turn of the handwheel equals 1/16” of a cut…so if you turn the wheel half turn it will equal ___of a cut. -If stock is to be planed thinner than 1/4” in, a carrier board should be placed under the wood and you measure the two pieces together to obtain your first setting on the planer. -To adjust speed- only while machine is running. You can run faster for soft woods but slower for hardwoods. If you have a lot of boards running faster will get the work done and not tie up the planner for the whole period. -Always support the board on the infeed and outfeed side for a better cut. Auker

Tablesaw Machine Size determined by MOS Specific safety rules
Specific instruction Tablesaw Diameter of the blade (ours is 12 inches) 4 inches -Make sure the correct blade is on the machine for the cut. -Never remove guards without instructor approval. -Always stand to one side of the blade and never reach across the blade while it’s running. -Use rip fence for cutting with the grain and miter gage for cross cutting and never cut free hand or use both of the above together. -Avoid kickback –(when the wood is thrown violently toward the operator without warning). -Be alert – don’t be lulled into a false sense of security with the ease of operation. -Don’t stand behind the tablesaw operator in the “kickback zone”. -Set blade height to be 1/8 in. above the wood being cut. -Wood must have one jointed edge and one finished surface. -Don’t lay metal tools on the table. -Use a pushstick when getting closer than 4 in. to the blade. -Students helping to “tail-off” should neither push or pull on stock. -Reasons for kickbacks – cutting stock that isn’t straight, dull blade, using fence and miter gage together, not using splitter and anti-kickback fingers, cutting small stock, not pushing wood past the blade before letting go, not paying attention. -Maximum width of wood that this saw will cut is 12 in. -Always push wood toward the fence and down against the table, all the way through Auker
12
Mitersaw Machine Size determined by MOS Specific safety rules
Specific instruction Power miter saw-compound slide miter saw Diameter of the blade (ours is 10 inches) 4 inches -Make sure turn base is secure before using. -Remove all small chips in path of saw before using -hold handle firmly because saw jumps up when starting. -Use a push block when fingers are to be closer than 4 in. to the cutters. -Workpiece must be secured to the base with the clamp before using. -Make sure blade is not touching wood before startup. -Wait till blade attains full speed before cutting. -End grain may be jointed but it too must be min. of 12 inches. -Start saw above piece of wood. Auker
13
Bandsaw Machine Size determined by MOS Specific safety rules
Specific instruction Bandsaw Diameter of the wheels (ours is 20 in) 2 inches for most work, use a push stick for closer work -Plan your cuts and try to avoid backing out of a cut and if you must then turn the saw off first. -If you hear a loud rhythmic clicking sound it may mean the blade is cracked and will break soon so turn off the machine and stand back -The immediate right side of the machine is the dangerous side. -Never leave the machine running and walk away from it (use brake to stop blade) -The upper guide assembly must be 1/8-1/4in above the wood being cut. -Hold stock flat and feed only as fast as the machine can cut. -Make turns slowly and if you see the blade twisting than you know you’re turning too tight. -Make RELIEF CUTS for tight turns (Instructor demo.) -If you are cutting round stock such as a dowel rod then you MUST use the miter gage and the V-BLOCK together. -You may cut freehand or.. -Use the rip fence for perfectly straight cuts with the grain or…. -Use the miter gage for straight cuts across the grain but NEVER use both of them at the same time. Auker

Drill Press Machine Size determined by MOS Specific safety rules
Specific instruction Drill Presses Distance from the chuck to the column and multiplying by 2. (ours measure 7 ½ in by 2 = a15 in drill press 2 inches -Make sure the key is removed before startup. -If work gets caught on the bit and spins, just turn the power off. -Don’t run auger bit in drill press. -Holes over ½ in should be drilled at a slow speed. -Mount the drill the full depth of the chuck but don’t tighten around the twist on the drill bit. -Adjust the depth stop so you don’t drill into the table. -Place scrap wood under the wood so you don’t drill into the table. -Center punch work to be drilled. -Clamp all small work. -Bits –forsner(bit with flat bottom) twist, spade Auker

Specific Instructions
Sanders Machine Size determined by MOS Specific safety rules Specific Instructions Belt and Disc Sanders Belt sander –width and length of the belt Disc sander – measured across the diameter of the disc 2 inches -Be careful of your fingers at all times and use clamps to hold work that is small. -Make sure the belt tracks in the center of the rollers and the disc is not loose. -Don’t use excess glue as this will load up the sandpaper. -Don’t push hard against the disc or belt as this will burn the paper or stop the motor which may burn it out. -Hold material against the table. -The belt can be set to be used vertically and horizontally so it can be used for edges, ends and surfaces. -The disc sander is used only for ends and you must use the side of the disc that turns down into the table. -Don’t use the sanders to do a job that another machine should be used for. -Only use the sanders after cutting is done as the sand particles will dull the cutting edges. Auker

Specific Instructions
Scroll Saw Machine Size determined by MOS Specific safety rules Specific Instructions Scroll Saws The distance from the blade to the overarm 2 inches -Make sure the holddown is resting on the wood. -Make sure the teeth on the blade point down. -Don’t make quick sharp turns or push too hard as both will break the blade. -Learn how to install a new blade. -This saw is designed for cutting curves and should not be used for straight line work.
