Penicillin is a natural substance
Joseph Lister experimented with it in 1871 when he noticed it seemed to weaken the microbes he was studying at the time Lister didn’t continue his studies Several other scientists also worked on penicillin as a treatment, but couldn’t make enough to treat patients sufficiently Instead in 1928 Alexander Fleming made a chance discovery

Why did Fleming fail to mass produce penicillin?
Fleming and his team failed to turn the mould juice into a pure drug No one was prepared to give him specialist help or funding This meant that although Fleming wrote up his findings, he did nothing more about his discovery
