Range: The UK’s clubs have largely aped those of the US. Originally full-service, family-orientated clubs were the norm in the US – then in the early ‘90s came the wave of low-cost, dedicated clubs – as copied, later, by Pure Gym and the Gym Group The sports vary by country – e.g. greater prominence to water sports or snow sports – but types of club are more conventional

Range: This has made is possible to have international club organisations such as Virgin and Fitness First. Virgin is biggest in South Africa with 133 clubs: there it has a 3-tier offer: gym, (£12 a month); health club (£15 a month) and full service club (including shoeshine) for £75 a month Virgin also in Spain, Italy and Australia

Conclusion Let’s not get distracted, though: the key UK structure in the private sector is low-cost/gym-focused v full range, family clubs The dynamic sector is low-cost, in which Pure Gym and The Gym Group are the prominent players But also don’t forget about the strength of public gyms and clubs
