General Information Scientific name: Streptococcus pyogenes.
They are gram-positive Metabolism: anaerobic, heterotrophs Produces a pyrogenic exotoxin Does not form endospores (no special adaptations) Classification: Streptococcus (round and in a chain) Habitat: blood

Impact Streptococcus Pyogenes causes Scarlet fever. This illness mostly effects children. Symptoms include fever and a bright red rash. It can be treated with antibiotics.

Wow Facts More than 10 million infections are caused by group A Streptococcus each year. Before the development of antibiotics, Scarlet Fever was the leading cause of death in children. Scarlet Fever occur mostly in children 4-8 years old.
