8. Introduction
There are lots of routes into teaching in Primary and Secondary Schools .
The three main routes we are looking at are:
undergraduate teacher training,
postgraduate teacher training - university route
Postgraduate employment-based teacher training

9. Work Activities Some of the work activities are:
Teaching children subject areas
Children’s welfare/safeguarding
Health & Safety in the classroom
Setting up displays of children’s work
Meeting parents/parents evenings
Arranging Class trips and school activities

10. Personal Qualities & Skills
Enjoys working with children/people and teaching
Knowledge of subject matter
Effective discipline skills
Good classroom management skills
Good communication with children and adults
Knowledge of the primary and secondary national curriculum
Strong rapport with learners

11. Pay & Opportunities
Main salary scale for primary and secondary teachers is £21,804 - £36,751 a year
Teachers who reach the top of the scale may be able to progress to the higher scale £34,523-£37,124
Separate pay scales for teachers with advanced skills or leadership roles

12. Entry Routes & Training
The most common routes are:
Undergraduate degree route – studying a degree for 3 or 4 years and gain qualified teacher status (QTS)
Postgraduate route university based – gain QTS by studying Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
Post graduate work-based route – gain QTS by training and working in a school at the same time.
A DBS check will also be required

13. Qualifications
Degree entry requires A levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications
Mature students who don’t have ‘A’ levels can do an Access Course
Postgraduate routes usually require a degree relevant to the subject you wish to teach.
Additional qualifications required are:
Primary School - GCSE (A-C) in English, Maths and Science
Secondary School - GCSE (A-C) in English, Maths (and science depending on which subject you are teaching).

14. Labour Market Information
A steady increase in the number of jobs for Primary School and Secondary School Teachers up to 2020.
This LMI is based on figures from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
