Essential Questions What is a simple sentence?
What is a compound subject? What is a compound verb? What is a compound sentence? What is a complex sentence? What is a compound-complex sentence? What is a subordinate conjunction? What is a prepositional phrase? What is a coordinate conjunction?

Simple Sentences Contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. Subject can be compound (Ms. Conant and I, The dog and the cat) Verb can be compound (She ate and drank at dinner, They hiked and biked last weekend.) Ms. Conant wants her students to understand this lesson. Ms. Conant and Ms. Loran want their students to understand this lesson. Ms. Conant wants and hopes for students to understand the lesson.

NOT simple sentences My baby went to the doctor, and she got a shot.
The boy went to the doctor because he needed to get a shot. Although the cat needed a shot, she didn’t want to go to the doctor’s. Why?

Determine which are Simple
Ms. Conant is awesome. Ms. Conant is awesome, and I love going to her class. Ms. Conant has a beautiful granddaughter. Ms. Conant sure is writing a lot of sentences about herself. Ms. Conant is going to try and stump her students on this activity about simple sentences. Ms. Conant and Eddie are not friends even though Eddie disagrees. Ms. Conant likes fantasy books and hates historical fiction. Ms. Conant can’t think of any thing else to write, so she is making this the last example.

Table Activity Look through the paper strips at your table
Put the strips together to form 5 simple sentences (one must contain compound subject, and one must contain compound verb) Be aware – some of the strips will create sentences that are not simple At least two sentences must contain four different cards (And does not count as one) First table to complete 5 simple sentences (that make sense) wins Be aware – If you call me over to look at your sentences and you are wrong, you are disqualified

Homework Write a paragraph about whatever you want made up of only simple sentences. You must have at least five sentences. You also must add 3-5 vocabulary words from units 1 & 2. Begin writing your piece for the author study. Continue working on project. I will be checking your progress over the next few class periods.
