Early Life - born on July 19, 1688 in Milan, Italy
- learned to paint from the influence of Andrea Pozzo, S.J. - worked as an architect and an excellent painter - he continued Ricci's ways by dialoguing with Chinese artists and introducing Western techniques in China

* Castiglione can be considered as a worthy disciple of Matteo Ricci because of their similarities.
He also continued what Ricci has left behind before his death due to sickness.

Early Life - he entered the Society of Jesus at the age of 19 and afterwards went to Genoa for further training - he was already an excellent painter upon joining the Society of Jesus - he became a Jesuit brother - at the age of 27 he received instructions to go to China as a missionary to preach and teach

In Journey... - took the Chinese name “Lang Shih-Ning”
- passed through Canton, and arrived in his destination, Peking at the end of December 1715 - remained in Peking for 50 years. - worked for Qing Emperors: Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianong - became the imperial artist of them

meeting Nian Xiyao - Castiglione met Nian Xiyao, an artist in charge of manufacturing ceramics for the palace - Nian Xiyao is eager to know Western perspective - Castiglione taught some western techniques then afterwards was able to write a book, named Shixue.

Death ( ) - died in Peking, China - he was more or less 78 when he died on July 17, 1766. - Died 2 days before his birthday ( July )

-he became the court emperor of China.
Legacy - he did the emperors' bidding by painting churches specifically in Portugal and Macao -he became the court emperor of China. - he became the most well-known European-Chinese painter because of his skill in Chinese and Western painting

- Able to design lots of historic and symbolic places like the Old Summer Palace
-Renowned to be one of the greatest artists and craftsmen who was able to contribute to China's culture and way of life through paintings - his drawing / painting was used to be the background of a certain post card, that's how talented he is.

Hardships and struggles
-he had a hard time in the first few years of his life in China because of communication -he had to adapt to China's rules and way of life - had a hard time to preach and convert Chinese people because of their strict belief and religion

Admirable traits :) - Even though he faced those difficulties, he still had time for God and he still persevered through hard times - he shared his talent for the welfare of the Catholic Church and for the people - he never left God in his life especially during all the struggles he faced
