Type in the course code: FXGEC – NCX4W (that enrolls you) Type in the corresponding Financial Aid code: 63B B-8300D-3EC3C This allows you to work for two weeks before needing to buy the Code. The code can either be bought at the book store which I recommend or you can do it online. There are two types the one for 11 weeks or there is a 52 week. After logging in start with the knowledge skills test. (Take it seriously)

What to expect. The class is a very hands on and group based.
Make sure to keep up on your ALEKS homework. Bring a Laptop or a tablet to class every day. (if you can’t afford one check it out at the library) Attendance is required for the activities End of the first day

The Center for Accessibility Resources is recruiting for a volunteer to do so. Volunteer Note Takers are compensated with a $50 gift card to either the LBCC Campus Store or Food Services at the end of the term for successfully providing notes to students in need. Directions are available for how to sign up and how to upload the notes electronically. Students depend on volunteer note takers for access to class notes. CFAR is asking for a reliable and responsible volunteer to provide this service for the whole term. Note taking is an experience that you can put on your resume or future job applications. If you haven’t bought the ALEKS financial aid code, then there is also an 11 week code that can be purchased. I would wait until next week before doing anything. If you know that your only going to take this class, then 11 week code is for you. But if not then talk to me, there maybe instructors using ALEKS for Math 111 of more in the Winter or Spring.

Mini Lecture: Relations and Functions
What is a function? Definition of a Function is a relation between one input x and one output y such that exactly one output corresponds to each input. How do we represent functions? Examples: Verbally- Consider a hiker walks 2 miles one day and observes 3 birds singing that day. The next day this same hiker walks 3 miles and observes 5 birds singing that day. Now the final 2 days hes walks 6 and 7 miles and observes 10 and 13 birds singing, is this a function? How can we determine this?

Function mini lecture continued.
Well, first we can start by using a table or a relation map. By using a Table we can clearly see what’s is going on. Now all we have to do is determine what are the inputs and what are the outputs. Next note that your inputs will be your independent variables and that your outputs will be your dependent variables. So the question is what is the input and what is your output? Well, it makes sense to label hiker miles walked as a variable, and birds singing as the other variable. The dependent variable is always dependent on the independent variable, which means that in this case birds singing are dependent on the hiker miles walked. The reason for this is that he would have never seen the birds singing without walking. Thus the birds singing are dependent, and the hiker miles walked are the independent.

Domain and Range Your domain is all the possible x values (inputs) and your Range is all the possible y values (outputs). Thus for this problem we have our Domain = (2 , 3 , 6 , and 7) Our Range would thus be all the corresponding y values. Range = (3 , 5 , 10 , and 13)

Functions continued What is a way that we can see this graphically?
We can plot the points that we have from the table using the miles walked as our horizontal axis (independent variable) and the vertical axis as our birds singing (dependent variable). Insert graph smart board graph for said slide

Functions continued: What is the vertical line test?
If no input has more than one output than it will pass the vertical line test. Easiest way to tell draw a line down any part of the graph if no points over lap vertically, then it passes if not then not a function. Insert a graph that is a function.

Welcome to Week 2 I’m hoping that everyone was able to get through their ALEKS Homework fine. Any quick questions Today we’re going to continue talking about functions and how they relate to the new topic of Linear Equations.

Linear functions Linear functions are just functions that happen to be just straight increasing or decreasing lines. They pass the V.L.T. and they rise a set amount and run a set amount. Who is familiar with the function of a line? Y=mx+b What does each of these symbols mean? Well, from last week our y variable is just the dependent variable, the x is our independent variable, and what are the other two things? M is just the slope of the function. How much it goes up and how much it goes over in one move of the independent variable x. B is simply your initial position on the y axis.

Domain and Range part 2 With the beginning of Domain and Range we were plotting just points. Now we’re going to plot the in between points as well which means that our Domain and Range are going to increase significantly. For linear functions our Domain now is from (– oo, oo) And the same can be said for the Range (-oo, oo)

Start by cutting out the 12 equations from the sheet and match them to the corresponding graphs on the next page. End of Day 1 week 2.
