1 Republic of Texas

2 What Now?? Texas had achieved its independence and now was faced with the task of starting up a brand new nation How do we do this? Once again the U.S. would serve as a model Both the new government and the Constitution would reflect an American Heritage

3 The Constitution of 1836 Similarities to the U.S. Constitution
Republicanism- a belief that government should be based on the consent of the people; people exercise their power by voting for political representatives. Limited Government- the principle that requires all U.S. citizens, including government leaders, to obey the law. Checks and Balances- the ability of each branch of government to exercise checks, or controls, over the other branches. Separation of Powers- the division of basic government roles into branches. Individual Rights- a personal liberty and privilege guaranteed to U.S. citizens by the Bill or Rights.

4 Mr. President Texas would see 3 presidents over the course of 4 terms in office during its time as a nation Sam Houston ( ) Mirabeau Lamar ( ) Sam Houston ( ) Anson Jones ( )

5 Sam Houston’s Legacy First Administration ( ) – Houston focused on forming a government and dealing with the issues of debt and the army, conflict with Native Americans and Mexico, and selecting a capital. Texas Rangers - When Sam Houston became President, he dismissed the army because of its cost and bad leadership. He replaced them by reinstating the Texas Rangers. Chief Bowles - Leader of a group of Cherokees that arrived in Texas in He signed a treaty with Sam Houston during the Texas Revolution Third Administration ( ) According to the Constitution, a person couldn’t be elected two times in a row. Most Texans were unhappy with the conflict during Lamar’s administration and re-elected Houston. His main focus was to return peace, decrease the public debt, and prepare Texas for statehood

6 Mirabeau Lamar Second president of Texas
Lamar did not agree with Houston’s policies focused on pushing Native Americans farther west a commitment to education and a new capital (Austin) On the negative side, he more than doubled the public debt by way of Indian Wars and increased inflation. Chief Bowles During the Lamar administration (1839), Chief Bowles was ordered to lead the Cherokees out of Texas; Bowles refused. Lamar ordered the militia to drive them out by force. Bowles was killed and the Cherokees were forced to present-day Oklahoma

7 Anson Jones Last president of the Republic of Texas
Jones supported Houston’s policies He maintained peace with the Native Americans tried to limit spending and turned over Texas to the United States when the people voted in favor of Annexation 1845 Texas annexed by U.S

8 The Texas Navy During Houston’s administration, the Navy protected the Texas coast but it was a drain on the nation’s finances Lamar had Congress issue bonds to purchased ships Very costly and most uses not successful Houston tried to sell the Navy during his second term but it fell through When Texas was annexed the Texas Navy was taken over by the US Navy

9 Summarizing the Republic
Texas was not very successful as it’s own country Plagued with debt Had accumulated massive war debts Struggled to gain recognition by other nations Many struggles with Indians and Mexico
