How do forces affect motion?

SC.6.P.13.3 Investigate and describe that an unbalanced force acting on an object changes its speed, or direction of motion, or both.

Learning Scale – I can … 4 – Design an experiment to demonstrate how forces affect the motion of an object. 3 – Describe and explain that an unbalanced force changes an object’s speed and/or direction. - Interpret & analyze distance-time graphs. 2 - Calculate the speed, time, and distance of a moving object. 1 – Describe how forces affect the motion of an object.

Types of Forces Unbalanced forces – forces acting on an object that do not have a net force of zero. Balanced forces – forces acting on an object that have a net force of zero. Net force – all the forces put together.

Determining Net Forces
If the forces are going in opposite directions, then subtract them. 10 N N Net force = 5 N to the left If the forces are going in the same direction, then add them together. 15 N N Net force = 15 N to the right

Think Pair Share If James pulls the box with a force of 4 N to the left and John pushes the same direction with a force of 5 N. What is the net force?

Think Pair Share If Cammie pushes the cart with a force of 2 N to the right and Hailey pushes the cart with a force of 2 N to the left, what is the net force?

Describing Motion An object is in motion if the distance from another object is changing. A reference point is the starting point you choose to describe the location, or position of an object. Position is an object’s distance and direction from a reference point.

What causes motion? Unbalanced forces cause an object to change its speed, direction, or both.

Think Pair Share – What conclusion can you draw about unbalanced forces?
