Simplification of approval markings
Transmitted by the expert from GTB DETA-25-09e Simplification of approval markings through the implementation of the “DETA” database and use of the “Unique Identifier” Initial ideas for: The proposed approach Information to be included in the Database Changes required to the Regulations Note: This document is based upon DETA-16-03e and has been updated to correspond to the proposal of the GRE –IWG-SLR (GRE-75-05).
2
The proposed approach Remove all type approval markings from the devices and require only a “Unique Identifier” that can be used to enter the database where all information currently provided by the markings will be presented in a simplified format for easier reference. As the requirements in the new regulations will apply to many devices it will become difficult to continue to operate the current marking system and the necessary information will held in the database

Example of New Light Signalling Device Regulations (One Regulations – Many devices Light signalling function (device) Identificati on symbol Reversing lamp AR Front direction indicator lamp to be installed more than 40 mm from dipped beam headlamp or front fog lamp 1 Front direction indicator lamp to be installed between 40 mm and 20 mm from dipped beam headlamp or front fog lamp 1a Front direction indicator lamp to be installed less than 20 mm from dipped beam headlamp or front fog lamp 1b Front direction indicator lamp to be installed on vehicles of category L 11 Rear direction indicator lamp (steady luminous intensity) 2a Rear direction indicator lamp (variable luminous intensity) 2b Rear direction indicator lamp to be installed on vehicles of category L 12 Side direction indicator lamp for vehicles M1 and vehicles N1, M2 and M3 up to 6000 mm in length 5 Side direction indicator lamp for vehicles N2 and N3 and vehicles N1, M2 and M3 more than 6000 mm in length 6 Rear registration plate illuminating device L Front position lamp A Rear position lamp (steady luminous intensity) R or R1 Rear position lamp (variable luminous intensity) R2 3 Stop lamp (steady luminous intensity) S1 3 Stop lamp (variable luminous intensity) S2 3 Stop lamp (central high mounted) (steady luminous intensity) S3 Stop lamp (central high mounted) (variable luminous intensity) S4 Rear fog lamp (steady luminous intensity) F1 Rear fog lamp (variable luminous intensity) F2 Front end-outline marker lamp AM Rear end-outline marker lamp (steady luminous intensity) RM1 Rear end-outline marker lamp (variable luminous intensity) RM2 Side marker lamp for M1 vehicles SM2 Side marker lamp for all vehicle categories SM1 Daytime running lamp RL Manoeuvring lamp ML Parking lamp None

Information to be included in the Database
An annotated photograph will be provided to clearly indicate all the approved functions. The annotations will then refer to a chart giving all the information currently specified in the individual Regulations

Note:. This is only a fictitious example to demonstrate the principle
Note: This is only a fictitious example to demonstrate the principle. It will be a rare case where so many functions are incorporated into one device .

Changes required to the Regulations
Remove all references to the markings (substitute these with the “unique identifier”). This will affect: section 2 Application for approval of a headlamp (Add the requirement for the annotated photograph and the summary table) section 3 Markings (remove the current requirement for the Circle with E and substitute the unique identifier). Decide how to manage other requirements such as the arrow indicating passing beam for Left or right traffic, etc. section 4 Composition of the approval mark (Major changes required) annex 1 Communication Form (Need a replacement for the list of markings indicating which approvals are applied for.) annex 2 Examples of arrangements of approval marks (This can probably be completely deleted)
10
Questions: Is the proposed approach to provide an annotated photograph with a table giving the details likely to be acceptable to the Type Approval Authorities? Would the Type Approval Authorities experts wish to be involved in developing a proposal to be submitted to GRE as an essential part of the Simplification work. Are there other factors to be taken into consideration.
