What led to the independence of South Sudan?

Political conflicts South Sudan became Africa’s 54th country on July 9, 2011 after a 99% vote in January 2011 to secede (separate/withdraw).

Political conflicts Why did they want it?? South Sudan and Sudan have been fighting ever since Sudan received independence from Great Britain in 1956.

Social Conflicts This civil war (war between two groups in the same country) was fought along religious and cultural lines. The Arabs in the north (who were mostly Muslim) were fighting the native Africans in the south (that were either Christians or Animists).

Social Conflicts There was very unequal access to education-literacy rate in Sudan is 61%, South Sudan is 27% (women-16%)

Economic Conflicts Fighting over oil was another cause of conflict between the 2 countries (South Sudan produces ¾ of the former Sudan’s oil output).
