* Know the school, department, faculty - Emphasize interest in their mission - Appeal to their faculty * Highlight your accomplishments - Balance technical detail & big picture - Balance paragraphs & bulleted lists * Conclude with your future directions - Be readable, realistic, and compelling

An informed reference can act as an effective personal marketer. * Select suitable references: - can address appropriate talents - will provide enthusiastic endorsement * Inform references of: - your current career goals - your up-dated CV or resumé - the jobs under consideration
