1 Sussex Experimental Particle Physics Group
Alessandro Cerri Convenor of MSc Physics

2 Sussex Experimental Particle Physics Group
10 faculty members, 9 researchers, ca 35 students from undergraduate to PhD Our research aims to answer some of the fundamental questions in modern physics: What is the origin of mass? Why is there more matter than antimatter in the universe? What is the nature of the neutrino? What is physics like, beyond the Standard Model?

3 ATLAS One of the big experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN
2012 discovery of the Higgs boson; now in Run 2 Some of the questions ATLAS seeks to address: What are the properties of the Higgs boson? How do they relate to the origin of mass? Do forces become unified at very high energies? Are there any extra dimensions in space?

4 ATLAS at Sussex Search for Supersymmetry signals
Flavour/B physics: rare decays Boosted jets Trigger system Upgrade of the ATLAS detector Antonella De Santo, Fabrizio Salvatore, Alex Cerri, Iacopo Vivarelli, Lily Asquith

5 Neutrino physics SNO+ experiment:
2 km underground at Sudbury mine in Canada Neutrino-less double beta decay Is the neutrino its own antiparticle (Majorana or Dirac)? Rich programme of neutrino and solar physics Neutrino oscillation experiments: NOnA and DUNE: Beams of neutrinos from Fermilab, Chicago NOnA: 810 km to northern Minnesota DUNE: 1300 km to South Dakota Which neutrino mass state is the heaviest? Is there CP violation amongst neutrinos?

6 Neutrino physics at Sussex
SNO+ experiment: Calibration with light (LEDs and laser) and with radioactive sources Data quality, run selection and data processing Sensitivity studies Simon Peeters, Jeff Hartnell, Lisa Falk NOnA experiment: Anti-neutrinos Data analysis Jeff Hartnell DUNE experiment: Trigger and data acquisition Calibration Sensitivity studies Jeff H, Simon P, Lisa F, Clark G

7 Neutron Electric Dipole Moment (nEDM)
Why is the universe made up of matter and almost no antimatter? Electric dipole moments: sensitive probes of T-violation A classic experiment – one of the most precise in physics Carried out at Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland Sussex holds world’s best measurement to date

8 Neutron Electric Dipole Moment (nEDM) at Sussex
High-precision magnetometry Evaluation of systematic errors Detailed simulation, modelling & analysis Design for next-generation experiment Philip Harris, Clark Griffith
