1 Focus: Students will identify precautions when entering or being around water.
Goal: To understand ways of being safe around water. Standard: NHES #2 – Safe and healthy environment Warm-up: Interview your peers and record their answers in your notebook. Be prepared to give feedback to class. Why is it important to learn about safety precautions when around or in water? What should you do if someone is knocked overboard? (Make up a question and ask your peers.)

2 Notes: Knowing safety precautions around water protects swimmers and boaters. The American Red Cross offers courses on learning how to swim. NEVER swim alone. Swim in only supervised areas. Life jackets and wet suits protect you . Wear them!! If you cannot swim, always wear a life jacket. Even good swimmers need life jackets when boating, skiing, rafting, or using jet skies. Wet suits protect you from hypothermia in cold weather. Hypothermia is a condition in which the body temperature is lowered to a dangerous point (below 95 degrees). Hypothermia is caused by very long exposure to the cold. It can cause: amnesia (memory loss caused by brain damage, disease, or psychological trauma), heart problems, unconsciousness, slowed bodily functions, and death.

3 Group Activity Read Scenario. Discuss with peers.
Sharon, an eighth grade student, is out boating with some of her neighborhood friends who are now in high school. They’ve been on the lake since noon. Late in the afternoon, they meet some other classmates boating on the lake. The other classmates have been celebrating the end of school. Sharon sees open cans of beer and several crushed beer cans on board their boat. Sharon and her friends are invited to join in the drinking, and all but Sharon are already joining in. Sharon is deciding what to do. What could Sharon do about this situation? How would you end this scenario using good decision making skills?
