2 Student Supports TAACCCT student supports prepare students to be successful when looking for employment. Preparation for employment begins at intake and continues throughout the course and beyond. Types of student supports offered: Volunteering and volunteer workshop Resume and cover letter workshops Mock Interviews Dress for Success networking sessions Orientation workshops: Board of Health workshop, career pathways, goal setting, healthcare breakouts Mid-term check ins Student exit plan meetings Student Follow up NJHPC NJPREP Landwehr March 2017

3 The Role of the Career Counselor
At intake- career focus and applicants are asked about their career path at initial contact. Career intake interview- focus on how the course will fit into their career path and what their employment plans are after the course. Discussion of volunteer experience During the course- volunteer experience and career workshops Discussion of careers at orientation Volunteer experience workshops and follow up Resume writing/cover letter workshop Mock interviews- Round 1 and 2 Mid-term check ins Exit interviews After the course- student follow up and sending job leads Searching for job leads and sending to students Creating employer contacts and sending their openings to students Meeting with students to discuss interview skills Following up with students regularly Following up with employers Documenting on Salesforce and Excel NJHPC NJPREP Landwehr March 2017

4 Customized Excel document: Tracks all student contact between TAACCCT employees and student. All TAACCCT employees have access to Excel documents to read and enter information for fluid tracking. Notes are entered into the Salesforce Data System for continuity of tracking. Customized Excel document: tracks all job activity between TAACCCT employees and student. 5 Volunteering Students are required to secure a volunteer site on their own or with the help of the career counselor (discussed at intake). Allows them to have practical experience working in the setting they are learning about. The grant has made contacts in the community who are willing to take on students Organized by career counselor Found by student on their own Volunteering is discussed throughout the course during class and during a workshop. Career counselor checks in with volunteer supervisor at the mid-term and after the course has ended. Challenges: Connecting with interested employers Student accountability Unexpected roadblocks Strengths: Experience to be put on a resume Networking Potential job opportunity NJHPC NJPREP Landwehr March 2017

6 Job Fair Student used all supports throughout the course in preparation for the job fair. Elevator speech, suits from Dress for Success, updated resumes To help students meet with employers. 5-6 employers were brought in to talk to the students. Purpose: For students to get a feel of what it is like to be on an interview and to prepare for meeting employers. To hear what employers are looking for in a candidate.
