4 Justice Administration Major (JUAD)
This major is only available to those students completing a BAS (BSOE) and/or AAS degree. The Justice Administration major is a cross between Criminal Justice and Public Administration. This major was first offered August 2005 Justice Administration with a specialization in Human Services was first offered and the specialization was removed as an option August 1, 2009. The Justice Administration major is a cross between Criminal Justice and Public Administration. It was first offered in 2007 as a specialization under Human Services and then moved to an actual major in 2009.

5 Majors/Minors/Specializations NOT allowed
Remember that majors/minors/specializations that are closely related are NOT allowed Justice Administration major along with the Applied Science major/Law Enforcement specialization Do NOT list JUAD as a specialization under Human Services, they are both majors now Remember in the 2009 catalog on up, JUAD is it’s own major and can not be listed as a specialization under Human Services.

6 Major Requirements- 2010/2011 catalog

Three (3) hours from the following: JUAD 3311 – Law Enforcement Administration JUAD/SOCI 3312 Law and Society JUAD/SOCI 3320 – Cultural Diversity Major requirements are 18 hours, and include: JUAD 3300, ethics, JUAD 3319, RSWR3345, three hours from JUAD 2300 or JUAD 3310, and three hours from JUAD 3311, JUAD 3312, or JUAD 3320.

7 JUAD “Related Courses”
Within the JUAD, 18 JUAD related courses are required. These can be any justice administration, psychology, sociology, law enforcement, ethic, management, or related area. MGMT 3304 has already been approved as a related elective The purpose of the 18 hour JUAD related courses is to let the student take classes and steer them toward what they think might benefit them professionally. 18 hours of JUAD related courses are also required in the major. These can be JUAD, psychology, sociology, law enforcement, ethics, management, or related areas. The purpose of the 18 related hours is to let the student mold the degree to what will benefit them professionally.

8 JUAD Major as shown on the 10/11 Template
36 total hours, 18 hours must be upper-level JUAD “Core Classes” 18 hours These two electives do NOT have to be upper-level if the core classes are ALL upper-level. Just make sure there are 18 UL hours in the major. JUAD “related electives” 18 hours Here you see the major in it’s entirety. There are 18 hours of core classes and 18 hours of JUAD related courses for a total of 36 hours. Remember that 21 hours on the degree plan HAVE to be upper-level academic hours and 36 have to be upper-level! Since the major cannot be reduced by a second major or a minor, 18 hours in the major HAVE to be upper-level! JUAD related electives can be: Justice Administration, psychology, sociology, law enforcement, ethics, management ,or related area electives

9 JUAD Snap-shot with DANTES & Credit
VC is a junior college/ DAN is DANTES test 1) 2) 3) 4) Be sure to watch test and transfer credit because they may be indirect equivalents, but won’t be upper-level, and 18 hours HAVE to be upper-level in this major. 5) One of these JUAD electives had to be changed to an Upper level JUAD elective to compensate for the test/junior college credit above 6) Now there are 6 classes (18 hours) of upper level credit on the degree plan

10 The JUAD Major History The JUAD major has gone through many changes each year since its creation… People in those previous catalog years may have courses listed they can no longer take. There were different required classes each year. Some of these courses need substitution cards and some do not. If a student needs the practicum for the previous catalog any WBU JUAD course will work, per Dean of the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences. If a student brings in a course from another school we have to have a substitution card. POLS 3303 – Public Administration was required in previous catalogs and must have substitution card for any other course The JUAD major has been through several changes. In working with older catalogs, make sure you consult the guidelines and issued degree plans as to core requirements and specialization within the Human Service major. In previous catalogs there maybe JUAD courses required we no longer teach. Some blanket exceptions have been given, but others require substitution cards. Whenever you are uneasy about the process ASK!

11 JUAD Major Information
Remember that the JUAD major cannot be reduced to 30 hours if a double major or a minor is present, only the Human Services and Applied Science majors have this option Remember that a student can no longer have a Human Services degree with a specialization in JUAD because they are now two separate majors No “cognate” courses can be used under this major ONLY the Human Services and Applied Science majors can be reduced to 30 hours if there is a double major or minor present. DO NOT reduce this major to 30 hours. Remember this major is now a separate major and no longer listed under Human Services. This major CANNOT have cognate courses.

12 Cross-listed courses JUAD, SOCI, PSYC have some cross referenced courses – please refer to the catalog. As of the academic catalog there are no longer any CRIJ courses. All CRIJ courses will be listed with the JUAD, SOCI, and/or PSYC prefix. Make sure when verifying enrollments that the student is taking the correctly pre-fixed course for the degree they are seeking! Many courses are cross referenced, meaning they are offered as JUAD, SOCI, and PSYC prefix. They are taught the same term, by the same instructor, in the same classroom. However, they are not the same course! If the student needs JUAD 3310-CRIMINOLOGY, make sure they do NOT sign up for SOCI 3310 thinking it will count for the same class on their degree plan.

13 Law enforcement certificates and training
Refer to pages of the guidelines for a comprehensive list of certificates, locations, and evaluated credit Some of the credit from these certificates will duplicate Wayland courses included in the Justice Administration core. These have been identified, and the courses they duplicate are indicated. The credits from certificates are indirect equivalents and do not grant upper level credit unless specifically notated. If a student has one of these certificates, please advise him/her not to take the WBU course which would duplicate credit already earned. Appropriate documentation showing the student’s completion of an academy is needed for the student to receive credit. Remember that if a course can be used from an academy or certificate that the course is an in-direct equivalent and can NOT be used for upper-level or academic credit! Also remember to mark it’s equivalent on the degree plan so that the student will not attempt to take the WBU equivalent and try to receive credit for it. The two courses will cancel each other out.

14 Law enforcement certificates continued
All students holding law enforcement academy certificates will receive 4 hours of Exercise and Sports Science, with only 3 used in the general education core. The 1 additional EXSS hour may be used in the general electives area. In order to be awarded the EXSS credit a student must have academy certificates showing completion of the course. The EXSS credit will not be awarded for bulk credit transferred from another college/university. Example: A student completes an academy through another institution and he/she is awarded bulk totals for portions of the course (i.e. 13 hours). The transferred coursework will not be broken-down to award EXSS credit. If a student has completed an academy (or been awarded credit for completing an academy) through an accredited college/university the student will have the option of choosing the coursework from the transferring institution or the evaluated credit from WBU. If the academy has not been evaluated by WBU, the student will only receive credit for the transferred coursework. Students whose credits are evaluated after 11/1/90, additional certificates and/or seminars will be evaluated at the rate of 20:1, unless it is unclear whether the credit was class or lab credit, which will be assessed at 32:1. If a student completes an academy through an accredited college they will have to choose whether to use the hours from the college or use the evaluated credit from WBU, but not both, that would be “double dipping” into the same hours and getting credit for the same work twice. If a student completes a law enforcement academy and has the academy certificates, WBU can award EXSS credit. If it is credit from an institution and is in bulk, WBU will not award EXSS credit.

15 Common Mistakes Reducing the hours below 36 with a second major or minor, this is incorrect, the major has to remain at 36 hours Forgetting the substitution cards for the various changes in JUAD catalog years and JUAD classes, remember that different JUAD courses have different rules Try to urge the student to take the JUAD ethics rather than the BUAD ethics if their requirement hasn’t been met Some of the most common mistakes with the JUAD major are reducing the hours below 36 with a second major or minor, forgetting substitution cards for courses in older catalogs requiring them, and not urging the students to try to take JUAD ethics rather than BUAD ethics.

16 Summary The JUAD major did not exist before August 2005.
The major is now no longer a part of the Human Services major, it is it’s own major Be careful when transferring in credit and evaluating test credit to make sure there are still 36 hours in the major and 18 upper-level hours Law enforcement training/certificates can be used but refer to the guidelines for equivalents and credit JUAD became a major in August 2005 and can not be used as a specialization in the Human Services major. Law enforcement training certificates can be used but refer to the guidelines for credit.
