1 Phonics and Other Stuff

2 Todays objectives By the end of this session you will have Have a better understanding of Early years and how phonics is taught in school. Understand what you can do to help your child.

3 Terms Phoneme - the shortest sound a letter can make. We usually call them sounds, sometimes we call them phonemes. Grapheme - another word for letters that make up the phonemes. They are the letter name A, B etc. Digraph - 2 letters one sound. Eg, ai, as in rain Trigraph - 3 letters one sound. Eg, air as in hair.

4 Blending for reading – putting sounds together to make a word.
Sound button, under each phoneme to help identify the separate sound, a line for digraphs etc. Fill this cart.

5 Segmenting for spelling:
breaking words down into sounds. Phoneme frames, robot talking, counting phonemes.

6 How we teach it. Daily sessions /small groups.
In each session children are expected to say phonemes on sight and either read phonemes / words or write them. Every time they write. Daily sessions /small groups. Follow government guide lines. (Letters & Sounds) Playing games and using talk to help consolidate learning.

7 What we teach They recognise the phoneme.
Learn to blend phonemes in words. Learn to write the phoneme. Eventually to hear the phonemes in the words they want to write and then write them. Letter formation is taught throughout. What we teach The sounds of letters in a set order. s, a, t, p, i, m, n, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b,f, ff, l, ll, ss Moving on to digraphs

10 Tricky words Words that cannot be decoded. I to no go the
Have to be recognised not sounded out. Will be sent home on sheets with key words from next week.

11 Revisit and Review Teach Practise Apply Mo n Recall all previously learned Sounds Teach ‘oa ’and ‘ar’ using jolly phonics actions and mnemonic cards.  Segmenting for spelling: Phoneme frame spelling words: loaf, toad, oak, foal, bar, park, card, jar. Blending for reading: Matching words and pictures p87 coat, boat, soap, goat. Reading captions activity Drawing a picture to describe: The coat is too big.

12 The children For those who struggle to grasp phonics we give extra support, small group and 1-1 sessions. When you child writes, praise every effort. Encourage them to hear sounds in the words. Demonstrate correct letter formation and pen grip if your child needs it.

13 Finally Our Expectations of your Child
Children able to take jumpers / coats on and off as a minimum. Please sign reading record whenever you have read. Write with your child in lower case. Water in bottles please Change for PE after Christmas.
