STEP #1 Identify the Problem
Disabilities In Our Clients Poor hand eye coordination Lack of upper body strength Can not center clay properly Create a device that allows them to do the job
4
STEP #2 Research the Problem
Needed Requirements Materials (cheap & efficient) Safety Size Durability Portable Time Constraints Find the right materials Space Existing Solutions Axner Power Arm Strong Arm
5
STEP#3 Develop Possible Solutions
Diagrams Based on existing solutions (Strong Arm, Sure Arm, Axner Power Arm) Home Depot View materials to get ideas Remember: materials needed to be cheap & efficient.
6
STEP #4 Select the Best Solution
Choosing the Best Design Best, & cheapest design was one arm Main Materials Wheelbarrow Handles Metal Screws Pipes/Rods Wooden Blocks Metal Plates (Aluminum)
7
STEP #5 Construct Prototype
Steps Used wheelbarrow handle Used aluminum plate to center clay Mount shelf Cut 60 degrees in arm Mount the plate onto the arm
8
STEP #6 Test & Evaluate Testing – Day 1 - Failure Revisions
People didn’t like it Hard time centering the clay Revisions - Center the arm - Reduce height of shelf - Reduce the angle - Added electrical tape Testing – Day 2 - Success - Much better - Flaws were improved
9
STEP #7 Present solution
Another Test Easy to clean New plate Centers Clay Helped disabled clients Fun for regular students
10
STEP #8 Redesign If another group were to redesign the project...
- Enough supplies ready for a top arm Top arm could come down Used to open up the clay from the inside
