Relevance of ecosystem service databases for decision-making

Introduction Objective: Show which information databases provide that can be used to inform policy instruments of safeguarding nature Main questions: 1) Which ES databases exist? 2) What are indicator for information demand? 3) How is information demand addressed by databases?
3
Methods Two reviews: 1st Identification of databases
Search in Web of Science 29 database 2nd Identification of information demand Structured according to 6 policy instruments (TEEB 2010) Search of literature contained in reviewed databases 94 indicator of information demand To contextualize information demand – what is the purpose of information demand – and to narrow down the manifold options of information demand. We used policy instruments suggested by TEEB (2010) that help to overcome current problems in policy towards a more sustainable management of nature under consideration of the ESC.

What are indicator for information demand?
Extent accounting systems through nature-based indicator Indicator linking natural capital with economic & societal accounting Incentive-based instruments Reform environmentally harmful subsidies Form of subsidies considered Effectiveness of subsidies against state objective, cost –efficiency & environmental impact Rewarding benefits through payments & markets Regulate the use of resources Address loss through regulation & pricing Regulate use through protected areas & recognition of their values Direct investment in ecological infrastructure & restoration

Outlook Development of database navigator
Contribution to IPBES Data & Knowledge Group Basis for standardization of ES concept (Munns et al. 2015, Natural Capital Coalition, etc.) Georeference information supply & demand - Roadmap for policy maker to reform policy frameworks & endorse new research efforts Based on the here shown analysis , we want to develop an interactive online tool that navigates through the databases. The navigator is conceptualize in a way that allows users to contribute customize graphical appearance and options to query, insert, update and modify data. Information needs and even other databases could be extended through, for instance, applications of Web Feature Service (WFS). this could support work from the IPBES Data and knowledge working group, initatives to standardize ES termiology and sematics (Lexica: Munns et al. 2015, NCC 2017, EnviroAtlas 2017) Plan to geo-reference database entries and information needs with spatial references to better allocate best practices and poorly investigated areas. This may help to set out a roadmap for policy maker to reform policy frameworks and endorse new research efforts.
