What are the 5 parameters in ASL?

Sign variations These are slight differences between signs,
Certain signs that vary from region to region, with some differences more well-know than others. In many ways, these sign variations resemble regional differences in spoke language

Deixis & Closing Signals
If a person or object is visible, point to it. If the person or object is not in the room, point to an empty space and continue signing. Why do we do this at the end of a sentence? This action shows a completion of thought, allowing somebody else to begin signing without interrupting you.

Classifiers Classifiers are handshapes that are associated with specific categories (classes) of size, shape, or usage. What must you do before using a classifier? NAME IT FIRST! Example: CAR – CL:3 or GIRL CL:1, BOY CL: 1

What are Directional signs/verbs?
Examples: ASK HELP TELL GIVE SHOW You use a directional verb/sign to indicate the movement from one person to another, or one place to another. Without having to sign the subject and the object each time. Example in a sentence: *Girl on right, Boy on left I-GIVE-HIM ; HE-SHOW-HER ; SHE-ASK-ME Remember: you are incorporating the SUBJECT and the OBJECT with the given directional verb!

Lexicalized Signs Lexicalization means that the manner of spelling is different from normal spelling. Lexicalized words are fingerspelled but something is different about how they are fingerspelled. (1) change/add movement, (2) palms face in/down/up, or (3) drop letters. Examples: #BANK #MALL #JOB #PARK #MALL #BUS

What are some rules of Fingerspelling?
Don’t bounce or punch. Hand should face out. Don’t open your hand between letters. Watch for the first letter and last letter. S-O-U-N-D it O-U-T Don’t erase the air. Focus on Clarity not Speed! Pause between words. ALWAYS use your Dominant Hand!

When do you Fingerspell?
Peoples Names? Yes Street Names? Movie Titles? Company names? Fingerspell proper nouns You can also fingerspelling things you don’t know – but you should gesture or act them out FIRST before going to fingerspell it.

AGE Spot Where is your Age Spot? First you can place a number at the Age-Spot and then move the handshape away from the chin in one movement, but you must stop at the # 9. What about #’s over 9? 10, 20, 30 years old? you may just point to your chin then sign the number or sign AGE first then as you move away from your chin sign the number. It’s on your chin

Remember: Rule of 9 when incorporating #’s!
What’s the rule? Why do we use shoulder-shifting?
Contrasting: Multiple topics or pieces of information in the same sentence. They are married, but they are divorced. Comparing: What more than one person says or does. This man is nice, this woman is nice. They are the same. Separating: More than one idea or concept in the same sentence. I have 3 dogs, 2 cats, and 7 fish.
