Risk tolerance increases when there are incentives, pay, rewards or other gains in place that encourage ‘faster’, ‘more of’, ‘cheaper’ or ‘short cuts’.
Individuals are prepared to take more risks when there can be personal benefit and gain from their actions.
This could include:
Working longer hours for the increased overtime and pay.
Compromising on personal safety equipment (i.e. using a worn out pair of boots with no traction, using worn out tool).
Working a second job on rest days.
Short cutting to get the job done faster.
Responding to productivity bonuses.
