Pick up a new blank engineering worksheet (EW) Review with group – roles for the week Who is Leader, Data, Materials and Safety? Mark your EW

3 Aircraft 4 – Estes Wind Seeker (WS)
Materials – Pick up: (4) Wind Seeker aircraft (one per person) (1) Sharpie pen (one each per group) Write your name and/or group on your aircraft (or, decorate it so you can recognize it.) DO NOT LAUNCH AIRCRAFT YET!

4 Aircraft 4 – Wind Seeker (WS)
Open the package. READ the directions on the back of the package together as a group CAREFULLY assemble the aircraft. Use the digital scale to measure the mass (weight) of the aircraft DO NOT LAUNCH AIRCRAFT YET! Rubber band goes inside the fuselage. The wing assembly is clipped above. READ the instructions before putting it together.

On your blue engineering worksheet, discuss with your group, and outline how the Four Forces of Flight apply: Where does the thrust come from? How is lift generated? How do drag & gravity apply? Safety eyewear MUST be worn when testing. How well does the Wind Seeker fly when hand launched vs. ground launched? Flight Test 4.1 Day One

Open to Flight Test 4.0 (FT 4.0) Take out current aircraft – Wind Seeker (WS) Safety – pick up safety eyewear for group

8 Flight Test 4.2 Wind Seeker (WS) Day Two
From previous sessions: Apply the Four Forces of Flight to your WS, and describe its flight in terms of the Three Axes. TODAY: How does a change in THRUST affect flight? (Does the number of “winds” make a difference?) SAFETY – make sure safety eyewear is used. Select evaluative criteria to explore changes in thrust. Draft engineering worksheet (EW). Plan your initial Design/build/test. Measure flight performance. DATA - don’t forget UNITS as necessary Flight Test 4.2 Day Two

11 Mini-Lesson A.1: Criteria for Success
On the Engineering Worksheet (EW), CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS is the second requirement. The Criteria for Success links the PROBLEM to the DATA (collected during Testing) An EXAMPLE from Flight Test 3.0: PROBLEM: How does an increase in thrust affect flight? Criteria: DISTANCE – If thrust is increased, distance will increase also. Distance will be measured in meters (0.00). Your test data should show that you are measuring changes based on criteria How is the CRITERIA related to the PROBLEM? How will you know your aircraft performance is improving? WHAT MEASUREMENTS you are going to take?

Update EW to include Flight Test 4.2 results TODAY: How does a change in THRUST affect flight? SAFETY – make sure safety eyewear is used. Confirm evaluative criteria (“How am I measuring changes in performance?”) Revise engineering worksheet (EW). Plan/Design/build/test changes & document Measure flight performance. DATA - don’t forget UNITS as necessary Flight Test 4.3 Day Three

Complete engineering worksheet (EW) for WS (one per group member) Double-check: Are all sections complete? Neat, clean legible? Measurements correct (units)? Flight Test 4.4 Day Four
