3 The Universiade, also known as the World University Games or the World Student Games, was inaugurated in 1959

4 The Universiade was held in odd-numbered years from 1959 through 1967
The Universiade was held in odd-numbered years from 1959 through Then there was a three-year hiatus to 1970 and another to Since then, the games have again been held biennially. The 1975 Universiade was replaced by a "World University Championships in Athletics," including only track and field events

The Winter Universiade was first held in 1960 at Zell-Am-See, Austria. Only 98 athletes competed, but that number grew to 1,500 from 50 countries by the 2005 Winter Universiade at Innsbruck.

7 There are 13 standard sports in the Summer Universiade and seven in the Winter Universiade.

8 Summer Games consists of ten mandatory branches and maximum of three optional branches based on the choice of the host city.

9 Mandatory Branches are:
-Athletics -Basketball -Volleyball -Football -Gymnastics -Fencing -Swimming -Water Polo -Tennis -Diving

10 Winter Games consists of six mandatory branches and additional one or two optional branches based on the choice of the host city.

11 Mandatory Branches: -Alpine Skiing -Nordic Skiing -Ice Hockey -Ice Skating -Biathlon -Figure Skating

13 Kazan city, the capital of Russia's Republic of Tatarstan, hosts the 2013 Summer Universiade. Students from all over the world will take part in this sporting and cultural event, considered to be second in importance only to the Olympic Games.
