Ben Jonson Primary School What is social media and networking? Social networking is a way of using your computer and other digital devices e.g. smartphone and tablets, to talk to other people, exchange pictures and share videos. Social media are the apps which allow you to do so such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram etc. Ben Jonson Primary School

Why this workshop? Social networking sites are a huge favourite with children, allowing them to stay in touch with friends over chat, meet new people with similar interests, and share photos and videos. Used appropriately, social networks are a great place for young people to demonstrate their creativity. As a parent, there’s plenty you can do to ensure your children’s experience is both safe and fun. Ben Jonson Primary School

6 Parental control settings

Staying safe online Children are quite often ahead of you and sometimes manage to find ways to bypass parental control settings. Talking to your child, openly, and regularly, is the best way to help keep them safe online Ben Jonson Primary School

10 Explore sites and apps together
Ben Jonson Primary School Explore sites and apps together Ask your child what sites or apps they like and talk about what might be OK for children of different ages.  Ask them about how they stay safe online. What is OK and not OK to share? They'll feel involved in the decision-making and learn to understand how to use social sites safely and why not to use some e.g. chatrooms and dating services.
