1 STRENGTH OF MACHINES Safety Presentation

To safely manage and work with machines in our industry we need to understand them Part of that understanding is recognising how powerful machines are We measure power in many ways. In the metric system we measure power in kilo Watts (kW). for mining horsepower

3 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
Our earlier measure of power was horse power (hp). Many of our machines today come into Australia from overseas, are still rated in horse power and we often still talk about horse power of a machine Understanding horse power will help us understand how strong machines are and help us safely manage machines in our industry for mining horsepower

4 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
Horses have been on Earth for many thousands of years We used horses before we had machines, which is why we used horse power as a measure of the power of a machine for mining horsepower

5 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
Most of us have had something to do with a horse at sometime in our lives: as an owner of a horse, as a rider of a horse, as a spectator at a horse event for mining horsepower

6 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
Think about a horse How many horsepower is one horse good for? ? (This is not a trick question) Answer: One for mining horsepower

7 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
Defined as how much power required for a horse to lift a weight using a pulley 1 hp is approximately equivalent to 735 watts 1hp is about ¾ of a kW for mining horsepower

8 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
How many times stronger is a horse than you are? Thoughts? Depends on the type of horse and how old it is and how strong the people are etc for mining horsepower

9 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
Lets say a horse is 10 times stronger than you are 10 is a good average and it makes the maths simple, But you can use any number you like for mining horsepower

10 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
How many horse power does that make a person good for? Answer: You are good for about 1/10 or 0.1 of a horsepower Because a horse is good for 1 hp and 10 times stronger than you are Hold that thought for mining horsepower

11 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
Has anyone here ever seen a Holden HSV Commodore? Or a Ford Performance Vehicle? Or owned or driven one? Probably one in the carpark today. How many kilowatts are these cars good for? for mining horsepower

12 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
About 300kW How many horse power is 300kW? About 400hp How many times stronger is a car like this than you are? When a person is good for 1/10 of a horse power A car is about 4,000 times stronger than you Guess who wins in a collision between a car like one in the carpark and a human? I would put my money on the car for mining horsepower

13 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
In mining we have lots of machines with lots of horsepower An Eimco loader is about 200HP or 2,000 times stronger than you A Cat D11 dozer is about 900HP or 9,000 times stronger than you A Cat 789 dump truck is 1,900 HP or 19,000 times stronger than you Think about how powerful any of the machines you used in our industry and how many times stronger that machine is than you are for mining horsepower

14 www.pitponies.com for mining horsepower
We have conveyors across the mining industry An underground or surface conveyor may have six 300kW drives That is 1,800kW or approx. 2,400HP That machine is 24,000 times stronger than you are Guess who wins in an altercation between a person and a conveyor for mining horsepower

What do you have between your ears that the machine doesn’t have? Thanks for watching Stay safe for mining horsepower
