2 Learning Outcomes Consider the range and scope of sponsorship for individuals, teams, sports and sponsors. Advantages and disadvantages of sponsorship The types of sponsorship that are acceptable and unacceptable.

4 What is sponsorship? Sponsorship is the financial or material assistance by a private business In return the business receives publicity through the performer they sponsor Key terms: Logo – the badge or emblem of the company Endorse – giving approval or support to something

Equipment Clothes Money payments Accommodation/Travel costs Concentrate on sport without financial worry.

More money to improve the event – organisation of London Marathon Prize money increased Image of sport can be improved Improve standard of performance New and minority sports can be introduced

E.g. Football More money into football Increase prize money for competitions e.g. Premier League Increase wages for players Best players come to Premier League Increase in performance Increase profile of sport

Financial Gain Healthy Image Advertising Tax relief

12 Disadvantages Sponsors may ‘take over’ the sport and start to dictate rule changes, clothing requirements, timing of the event. Sponsor can withdraw support from individual/team/event ie. Tiger Woods lost millions of pounds in sponsor deals due to infidelity. Minority sports find it difficult to attract sponsors.

13 Unacceptable Sponsorship
Tobacco firms-encourage people to smoke which is a health risk Alcohol firms- encourage underage drinking/alcohol abuse which is dangerous Junk food encourage unhealthy eating.
