GOALS… What is Bullying? What are the different types of bullying
What should YOU do about it

Do a series of questions. Do not use the word “bully.” Stand up if…
You like cartoons.. You have a twin … you love pizza… You have ever had a time when someone made you feel sad, mad, lonely, hurt your feelings… congratulate them for being honest because it shows that they are in touch with their feelings You have ever had a time (whether by accident or on purpose) when you made someone feel sad, mad, lonely, hurt your feelings…congratulate them for being honest because it shows that they are insightful enough to realize that their behavior can impact others (this is a huge developmental task)

What Is Bullying?

Bullying is… mean or hurtful behavior that someone does on purpose, to hurt, scare or embarrass another person and happens often. Bul Bullying and Hazing Policy, 2012

Verbal Bullying May include: Name-calling Teasing Gossiping Making threats Making rude noises Spreading rumors Give an example of Non-verbal bullying. Make a threatening gesture. Nonverbal Bullying Examples: making threatening gestures mean faces
destroying property Physical bullying is usually more easy to identify. Would anyone like to provide an example of physical bullying?

Physical Bullying May include: Hitting Pushing Shoving Poking Kicking Tripping Strangling Hair pulling Emotional Bullying may be a little harder to identify. Any examples? H. Priebe-Diaz, Human Relations, Diversity & Equity 8

Social Bullying May include: Leaving someone out Rejecting Humiliating
Manipulating friendships Isolating Rating or ranking 9

Cyber Bullying Sending or posting mean or threatening messages or images by phone, , social media web-sites, text message or any other electronic or written communication Ask how many have cell phones or face book. In this age of ever-advancing and quickly changing technology we have to add cyber bullying to the list. 10

Why do students bully?

What should you do if you are bullied?

If you are being bullied, you should…
STOP: Tell the person to “Stop” Say “I feel _____, when you______”. WALK: Ignore them and walk away. TALK: Report it to an adult, it’s not tattling.

Stay with others or near an adult.
Be a friend to others are alone. Be proud of who you are.

Distract the person, maybe say something funny or change the subject.
Do not fight back with fists or bad words. Do not keep it a secret.

What should you do if you see someone being hurt?
Tell an adult (it’s not tattling) Be a friend. If safe, stand up and say, “Stop, that’s not o.k.”

Scenarios & Role Playing
Select 5 students to act out this scenario. Stop the action and debrief 2 students bully another… (what is going on here? what if the bully was your friend, what if the target was your friend?).. Resume action 1 friend of the bullies (the hero) gives them good advice about how to behave 1 friend of the target (another hero) gives friendship to the target

Speak Up! Don’t be a Bystander. Be a hero. Give good advice.

If you have hurt someone in in the past, what can you do to make it better?
Few actually see themselves as bullies. The capacity to make amends is very important.
