What / Why ? Measuring the salinity of the water
Unit of measure is TDS (total dissolved solids) All measurements / observations / dock at house (6108 Pelican) Direct correlation of our position on the Neuse River Cross checked with water in NW Creek/Goose Creek Understanding the fishing seasons / rhythms “trigger” times for change Explain Canal Phenomena (microbial blooms)
4
Location of Samples
5
Relation of FFH in Neuse River
6
Salinity Drinkable fresh water < 500 ppm
Fresh water - Less than 1,000 ppm Slightly saline water - From 1,000 ppm to 3,000 ppm (Brackish) Moderately saline water - From 3,000 ppm to 10,000 ppm (Brackish+) Highly saline water - From 10,000 ppm to 35,000 ppm (sea water) Open Ocean Seawater – 35,000 ppm
7
Salinity vs. Time
8
Salinity 2017 is starting in a pattern not seen in many years
We did not have our January – May freshwater cycle We started summer mode in January The water is brackish The normal estuarial cycle of the water is broken Saltwater fish dominate
