Access to London Mathematics Challenge Community
All materials presented today will be available on the NCETM portal in the Access to London Mathematics Challenge Community (Topic entitled Network Day July 11th) NOW introduce David Hewitt a teacher for 11 years including a Head of Department for five years. Since 1990 he has been working at the University of Birmingham gained his PhD in 1994 on research relating to the notion of economic use of time and effort in the teaching and learning of mathematics. currently works with PGCE students and experienced teachers studying for a Masters or Doctoral degree and has run sessions in schools and at conferences throughout this country and abroad. also has an interest in how technology can be used to help students access mathematics which might otherwise be considered too demanding for them. has developed computer software including Developing Number, Grid Algebra, and a series of computer files and activities for dynamic geometry software – Active Geometry, all of which are available from the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM).

Where to get ideas and thoughts?
Look at these dice What do you facts do you know about dice. Sketch what you see on paper. The latest edition of Mathematics Teaching 209 (ATM publication £86 per year for Secondary school)

What is the total number of dots on top of the two dice shown?
They could do this with practical equipment What maths do you visualise? You don’t need to do all the lesson on the computer it could be the stimulus Eg if the dice were combinations Have a look at the sheet in your packs or give out sheets

A way forward for ICT Work in groups either in your school or within your cluster Link up with a colleague in the Network Share on the portal Elluminate for training ‘How to’ if needed or to work collaboratively but remotely Let the students form a group Those that are interested could be part of a possible Becta project which may focus on helping visual learners with developing their mathematical understanding through the use of dynamic images. Ravensbourne have taken up the opportunity I have 6 site licences of YENKA for schools YENKA have offered 25% discount for orders before end of term.

NCETM & TDA Professional Enquiry Project – What’s the commitment?
You will attend one of the regionally-based initial briefings in September of 2008, where you will receive guidance on working within a Professional Enquiry Group. You will then join your own group and this will meet at least three times during the course of the pilot, which finishes early in 2009. You will receive plenty of support along the way – tools, resources and professional advice. A review meeting, in March 2009, will help to evaluate the project and improve the model, in preparation for sharing it more widely with your colleagues throughout the mathematics community You identify what the professional enquiry it is you want to do as an individual who will be paired up with someone in the region As a lead representing the colleagues from your school with whom you will work on the project As an already established group As individuals from an established group wanting to work with other individuals from another established group Could involve action research Could be a topic or subject specific Could be use of ICT Could be engaging disaffected Yr 9 girls Could be wanting to gain promotion
