To learn what library services, resources and facilities tauira use for study and research To identify tauira perceptions of library resources and services To learn how satisfied tauira are with library resources and services To identify unmet needs of tauira To learn of tauira’s perception of an Indigenous library (what should it look like, feel like and sound like)

Participant Recruitment
Research Team recruited Rohe Library staff to help recruit students at each of our 6 rohe Advertised at each rohe by Library and Student Support staff Student reps from each course were selected by the student to represent them 15 students were selected from each rohe Age of participants ranged from 17 to 60

Hui 5 Open ended questions
Hui session was coordinated by a facilitator Participant responses was video taped Participants were allowed to express their views without any comments or interjections

What does the Wānanga values mean to you? What do these values? Feel like to you? Look like to you? Do you think it is practiced at your library? What should an ideal (future) Wānanga Library look like? Do you have any other suggestion / recommendation for Wānaga Library?

Findings Service – highly rated
“I was amazed at the range of services you have available in the library. I used to send list of books I wanted and the book came from all over from different universities and one came from Australia” “ I sent a message to the library and the books kept coming and messages were sent that the book has arrived” I did a call slip and the book arrived the next day. I was blown away by the service provided”

Library programme around Maori events such as Matariki Music Bigger Library Regular Library workshops Txt messages from the Library reminding overdue books, events, etc. Holographic histories Coffee area

What tauira want… Area for kids 3-D screen, latest technology
Ability to Skype to other indigenous organisations/discussion groups Colourful, bright not dull library, plenty of natural lighting Library as a hub with spaces branching out like – digital, music, study, meeting, etc. Self accessing digital tutorials on computing, information literacy, etc.

What tauira want… Multipurpose walls
Wānanga and other Universities publications in digital space for students to access Space for recording music, video and editing facility

Conclusion Library has put in place some strategies to meet the needs of tauira: Discovery layer as a “one stop shop” for discovering range of information resources from variety of sources Waiariki Rohe will be trailing loan of laptops. Central Library has tablets for loan More long-term strategies are being put in place to meet other wants of the tauira within the budget constraints
