6 Floating plants, like pond weeds, grow in the pond.

7 Cattails and other large plants grow around the edges of the pond.

8 Larger animals arrive at the pond.

9 Runoff water brings sediment deposits into the pond.

10 The pond becomes a marsh area as sediments fill the pond.

11 Grasses and short plants grow on the top of the soil that fills the pond.

12 Shrubs and short-lived trees begin to be the dominant plant in the area.

13 Oak trees become the dominant plant in the area.
