Fractions Reminder Fractions have two parts: A Numerator &
A Denominator Numerator Denominator Next
3
Finding Common Denominators
Before you can learn to add or subtract fractions you must first learn how to find the Least Common Denominator (LCD). A Common Denominator is a common multiple of all of the denominators Next

Finding Common Denominators
Next Finding Common Denominators Cont. . . Example 1: Write and as fractions with a common denominator. A common denominator of and is a common multiple of 3 and 4. List the multiples of 4 until you have a common multiple of 3 and 4. Is 4 a multiple of 3? No 4 8 12 16 Is 8 a multiple of 3? No Is 12 a multiple of 3? Yes 12 is a common denominator of and . 12 is the Least Common Denominator (LCD).

Finding Common Denominators
Next Finding Common Denominators Cont. . . Example 1: cont . . . Now it is time to find the fractions equal to and that have a denominator of 12. 1 x ? 3 = 3 2 x ? 4 = 8 8 ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 3 = = 3 x ? = 12 4 4 4 4 4 x ? = 12 3 3 3 3 = =

Finding Common Denominators
Next Finding Common Denominators Cont. . . Example 2: Write , and as fractions with a common denominator. List the multiples of 8 until you have a common multiple of 2, 3 and 8. Is 8 a multiple of 2 & 3? No 8 16 24 Is 16 a multiple of 2 & 3? No Is 24 a multiple of 2 & 3? Yes 24 is a common denominator of , & . 24 is the Least Common Denominator (LCD).
