BACKGROUND Amalgamation of 3 schools opening in Sept – Birch Green, Skelmersdale. 3 schools with teaching and non-teaching staff having different approaches to pupils A new head with a very traditional approach A ‘unit’ for the 12 ‘naughty boys.’

CHANGE First few months Traditional approaches not working Pupil and staff distress Self-fulfilling prophecy from parents BIP – chance to appoint staff Shared behaviour policy with identified ‘steps.’ Training for all staff Circle time S.E.A.L.

EMOTIONAL LITERACY Asking pupils to talk about their feelings Being non-judgemental Listening Consequences for actions Respecting views of others Giving the opportunities and language to express feelings

RESTORATIVE APPROACHES
Culture of expressing reasons for behaviours Accepting responsibility for their actions An understanding of the hurt caused The chance to make amends The ability to empathise

FROM THE HORSE’S MOUTH ‘….it helps us understand how others feel.’
‘….by getting stuff sorted out you can find a lot more friends.’ ‘….it helps the teacher understand as well as the pupil.’ ‘….it gives the victim a boost if they are feeling down or sad.’ ‘….you might not know how much you are hurting them inside.’

ABBIE Y6 ‘ ….in Woodland we talk it over so we understand our actions and the hurt we have caused towards other children. For instance if a child was being bullied we would make the bully face the victim with their friends and sort out what the resolution should be.’
