7 Renewable Buildings in Canada
Province of British Columbia - Climate Leadership Plan (2016) City of Vancouver – Green Buildings Policy for Rezonings Living Building Challenge (LBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Canada Green Building Council – Zero Carbon Building Initiative

8 British Columbia Climate Action Plan
Emerald Lake, British Columbia The B.C. government has been committed to a low-carbon future since Released in August 2016, the B.C. Climate Leadership Plan proposes actions to meet the goal of reducing GHG emissions by 80% of 2007 levels by Included in these strategies is an action under Public Sector Leadership to promote the use of low-carbon and renewable materials in public sector buildings. For more information: 2007 – Sets GHG targets on the International Panel of Climate Change findings 2008 – Launched Climate Action Plan 2010 – North America’s first revenue neutral carbon tax Since 2010 – Carbon neutral government

9 City of Vancouver Green Buildings Policy for Rezonings – May 2017
Rezoning Application May 1st, 2017 Residential (MURB) Commercial Buildings A. Near Zero Emissions Buildings (Passive House, NZEB) B. Low Emissions Buildings - CoV 10 point A. Near Zero Emissions Buildings (Passive House, NZEB) B. Low Emissions Buildings LEED ® Gold CoV 10 point

10 City of Vancouver Green Buildings Policy for Rezonings – May 2017
From B. Low Emissions Green Buildings, CoV “10 point”: This is a requirement. All buildings that choose this option MUST complete an embodied carbon assessment. There is no baseline at the moment; projects just need to report the actual building project. During Rezoning, a preliminary LCA will be required., including how to reduce embodied emissions. Building Permit: Updated LCA plus description of how measures to reduce embodied carbon were undertaken. Occupancy Permit: Final LCA, including any changes that were made during construction. - From “Green Buildings Policy for Rezonings (2016). Retrieved from:

11 Living Building Challenge
Materials Petal Imperative 11 – Embodied Carbon Footprint Projects must conduct an embodied carbon calculation of the building through construction and purchase a carbon offset from an approved provider. The LBC is a very ambitious and stringent green building rating system that was first launched in There are currently 11 fully certified Living projects, 10 petal certified, and 20 Net Zero Energy Certified Projects. In the earliest versions of this standard, the LBC has required that projects pursuing full Living certification meet this imperative. 12 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – Version 4 (LEED ® v4)
Materials and Resources Credit: Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction - Option 4: Whole-Building Life Cycle Analysis (3 points) Details: LCA of Structure and Enclosure only. Demonstrates a 10% reduction in at least 3/6 impact categories compared with a baseline, one of which is global warming potential in CO2e. No impact category can increase by more than 5% over the baseline. Impact Categories Global warming potential (GHGs) in CO2e Depletion of the stratospheric ozone later, in kg CFC-11 Acidification of land and water sources, in moles H+ or kg SO2 Eutrophication, in kg nitrogen or kg phosphate Formation of tropospheric ozone, in kg NO2, kg O3, or kg ethane Depletion of nonrenewable energy sources, in MJ Commonly used LCA tools in Canada and the US: Athena Institute’s Impact Estimator for Buildings is the most widely used due to its deep database of structural materials. Note: All datasets must be compliant with ISO standards. LCA Practitioner Tools/ Specialist Tools: GaBi

13 Canada Green Building Council – Zero Carbon Building Initiative
Targeting Commercial, Institutional and Multi-Family Residential Buildings in Canada Three phases: Phase 1: Development of a Zero Carbon Buildings Framework Defined Zero Carbon Buildings Established 5 key components of Zero Carbon buildings One component is Embodied Carbon metric Framework recommends that project teams start to track embodied carbon emissions from building structure and enclosure Phase 1: 50 people from 40 orgainzations 5 components: GHG intensity metric Energy intensity metric Peak energy demand metric Embodied carbon metric Renewable energy gen on site or directly procured *

14 Canada Green Building Council – Zero Carbon Building Initiative
Targeting Commercial, Institutional and Multi-Family Residential Buildings in Canada Phase 2: Launch of the Zero Carbon Pilot Program Two year pilot program New and existing buildings Help refine the Zero Carbon Building Standard Phase 3: Launch of Zero Carbon Building Standard To be launched at Net Zero Carbon Buildings Summit, May 30, 2017 in Vancouver, BC More information:

17 Group Discussion For Renewable Products:
Group 1: What work do Cities need undertake to create baselines and targets? Group 2: How do Renewable Cities strategies need to change if we are considering materials? Group 3: What other policy levers can you think of that Cities may want to explore more to push renewable products? Time: 20 minutes. Present ideas at the end of group discussions. This is a requirement. All buildings that choose this option MUST complete an embodied carbon assessment.
