ELLs in Texas: What Teachers Need to Know
PLC Guide Chapter 7 – My Professional Growth as a Teacher of ELLs (Part 2) This PLC meeting is the last in the series. We hope you have found these meetings helpful. There is no video segment for this meeting. This meeting covers the last part of Chapter Seven in ELLs in Texas: What Teachers Need to Know, My Professional Growth as a Teacher of ELLs (Part 2). Each participant will need their copy of the book, highlighter, pen and post-its. You may want to have chart paper or a whiteboard available. 1

Put it on the Table With a partner, discuss what you learned in your review of the educator standards for Bilingual and ESL Education. Share what professional development opportunities you have attended regarding teaching ELLs, providing sheltered instruction, and implementing the ELPS. Participants may make a list of the trainings they have attended. 2

Talk 1 Discuss: “In order to become an expert teacher of ELLs, all I need to do is take and pass the ESL certification.” 3

Read Based upon your current level of expertise (based upon your own assessment), select two questions/answers to read from the list on p. 257 Pay Attention To ways in which the information you read will help you move from an experienced to expert teacher of ELLs 4

Talk 2 Discuss the following questions in a pair or small group:
What is your current level of expertise in teaching ELLs? What factors contributed to this decision? What do you believe would best help you move from inexperienced-to-experienced or experienced-to-expert? Classroom Tip: Activities like this one and the one that follows are very helpful for students, and especially helpful for ELLs who are managing the acquisition of both English and content. There is something satisfying about self-assessment and in making a plan for advancement. 5

Write Using the information from the activity, create a Triple P - Personal Professional Plan (see pp ). Select: 1 book or article to read and study 1 professional development opportunity to attend in the next six months 1 classroom practice to add 1 activity for professional growth aligned with your role Include a short explanation as to why you made these selections. Ask the participants to make a personal promise to themselves that they will complete their PPP. You might print out the forms in advance so that they can fill them in, or they may choose to complete the chart in their book and mark it with a post-it. 6

Make It Real As a group, review the experiences you have had together as you’ve gone through these PPTs and completed the connected tasks. Talk about how this course of meetings has impacted you, and more importantly, the ELLs you teach. You may want to keep meeting as a group to explore this book and your classroom practices further.
