Background -- His mother was a teacher, it shared Steinbeck’s passions of writing and reading. He lived in a small rural town. He spent his summers working on nearby ranches and later with migrant workers on Spreckels ranch. He realized how harsh the life of the migrants could be. That’s the reason why he wrote Of Mice and Men. Also the book leaded him to get the Nobel Prize for Literature. In his speech when he got the prize, he said that it was writers’ duty and responsibility to prove human beings real emotion. They need to against weakness and despair and show the love and courage.
