PACA Parents Information Evening Thursday Sept 11th 2017
Helping your child succeed in maths.
2
AIMS of this evening: To explain the 5 years to GCSE Mastery Approach
To show you, as parents, what resources are available to help your Son/Daughter with their homework.
3
The Mastery Approach: 5 year model spreads the topics over 5 years. This allows more time to master every topic as opposed to re-teaching the same topics year on year. It links topics together in the same term to promote learning the inter-connections in mathematics. Offers more opportunity for class teachers to assess the students properly and for the students to go back and “Plug the gaps” in their knowledge – Exit tickets. Mathematical concepts are explored in a variety of representations (CPA) and problem-solving contexts, to give pupils a richer and deeper learning experience. Key topics learned in year 7 will appear within other topics over the years, such as Fractions, Decimals and Percentages so the skills do not diminish.
4
Concrete – Pictorial - Abstract (CPA)
More than ever, has there been a focus on using some of the learning aids often seen in Primary Schools, that have seldom been used in Secondary. One example is Multiplying Fractions: 1 4 x = 1 8 (Multiply the Numerators and Multiply the Denominators…..easy)
5
Concrete representation:
You have a chocolate bar 8 pieces long. To find x 1 2 , we need to think of the multiply sign as “of”. So the problem becomes of
6
1St of all – identify
7
Now identify of = 1 8
8
Also, due to the Commutative Law (axb = bxa),
it can be found the other way round, ie. 1 2 of = 1 8
9
1st identify
10
Now identify of = 1 8
11
Pictorial representation:
12
1St of all – identify 1 2
13
Now identify of = 1 8
14
Also, due to the Commutative Law (axb = bxa),
it can be found the other way round, ie. 1 2 of = 1 8
15
1st identify
16
Now identify of = 1 8

Homework: FLIP The FLIP classroom idea promotes the students to go away and research the topic 1st , so the students have an idea of what to expect. Then in the lesson the teacher can stretch the students further with more in depth problem solving tasks / CPA, rather than starting from scratch. The 2 best things you can do as parents to help your child with their homework are: Promote independence: - Have you looked back through the notes in your book? - Have you researched it on line yet? 2) Challenge them: Get them to explain their homework to you; use phrases like: “Are you sure? Convince me!” Or “Yes but I’m still not getting it, can you explain that in a different way using a picture or objects?”
18
Maths Homework will be set using the PiXL Maths app.
Their will also be some FLIP homework tasks
19
PiXL Maths APP This is the best on line resource out there.
We are centralising the students’ skills analysis through the PiXL maths APP. After every assessment through out the year, there will be a RAG (RED/Amber/Green) analysis of their assessment. Which will highlight their strengths and weaknesses. Through the app the students can access support and resources to practice. The idea is to “Plug the Gaps!” Daily challenge.
