3 Oxbridge Oxford (12th century) and Cambridge (13th century) are the oldest and most prestigious Universities in Great Britain.

8 CAMBRIDGE Many great men studied at Cambridge, among them Desiderius Erasmus, the great Dutch scholar, Roger Bacon, the philosopher, Milton, the poet, Oliver Cromwell, the soldier, Newton, the scientist, and Kapitza, the famous Russian physicist.

11 The Scottish Universities
The Scottish universities of St. Andrews, Glasgow, Aberdeen & Edinburgh date from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

14 The Redbrick Universities
In the nineteenth and the early part of the twentieth centuries the so-called Redbrick universities were founded. These include London, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, and Birmingham.

22 The New Universities During the late sixties and early seventies some 20 'new' universities were set up. Sometimes they are called 'concrete and glass' universities. Among them are the universities of Sussex, York, East Anglia and some others.

26 Polytechnics During the late sixties and early seventies the government set up 30 Polytechnics. The Polytechnics, like the universities, offer first and higher degrees.

27 The Open University There's an interesting form of studies which is called the Open University. It's intended for people who study in their own free time and who 'attend' lectures by watching TV and listening to the radio.

29 College and university admission/entrance requirements

30 All candidates fill in application forms (UCAS forms) which contain their current results of study, or: - marks that the applicant received at the end of A-level preparatory course, - marks that the applicant assumes to receive at his/her final exams, - description of the applicant´s orientation and ambitions, including the reasons for choosing his/her career in the field (a brief essay called personal statement), - a list of British universities, in alphabetical order, (6 at maximum) at which the candidate would like to study.

31 Degrees Degree titles vary according to the practice of each university; the most common titles for a first degree are Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS). The second degree titles are Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Science (MS), the highest degree in most fields is the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
