3
Background Non-directed donors (NDDs) altruistically donate their kidneys to complete strangers Dawn Dorland Perry, NDD Age 35 – Los Angeles, CA
4
The Kidney Donor Domino Effect2
In 2012, 30 transplants from a single NDD1
5
Methods and Participants
Interviews conducted via telephone Grounded theory approach3 Coding using ATLAS.ti v7 Inductive category formation 31 NDDs recruited from: National Kidney Registry Living Donation California UCLA Kidney Transplant Program
6
Results Majority of 31 NDDs: non-Hispanic white (97%), college educated (87%), annual incomes >$100,000 (66%), blood donors (75%), registered bone marrow donors (75%) Short Form Health Survey (SF-12)4, 5 Mean NDD scores > Mean U.S. population
7
Post Donation Experience
Results Post Donation Experience Physical Recovery General Health Effect on Lifestyle Outlook on Donation Follow-up Care
8
(2) General Health “I’ve always been a healthy person…But I think that I am more conscious of it now. And taking good care of my body. So that I can stay as healthy as I am for as long as I can.”- (Female, 63)
9
(3) Outlook on Donation “It’s probably enriched my life. There’s a statistic, it says people who donate an organ tend to live longer. It’s not because you donate your organ, it’s because your positive outlook on life, which I have. I think that’s going to carry me quite far.” - (Male, 60)
10
Follow-up Care “...The only thing that I continue to think, was the importance of follow-up on the part of the transplant center…but it would be good if donors could say ‘yes, the hospital followed up with me. ” - (Male, 62) “Donors need an avenue to tell their stories and spread the word and keep this kind of momentum going. There isn’t a whole lot of direction after the fact…” - (Female, 38)
11
Conclusions Post-Donation Outcomes
84% of NDDs did not experience significant changes to their physical health, general health or lifestyle 100% of NDDs enriched their outlook on life and appreciation for their own health 87.5% of NDDs experienced difficulty with accessing follow-up care
12
Next Steps Better follow-up care post-donation
Removing financial disincentives Forming national support group for NDDs
13
Limitations Lack of a racially and ethnically diverse participant sample NDDs from minority racial and ethnic groups and of lower income might differ Only interviewed NDDs willing to contact us and discuss their experience
